Transport trucks make up just 3% of vehicles on Ontario roads, but they're involved in 12% of fatal collisions. A new report from Ontario's Auditor General sheds some light on why that gap exists.
When her office sent six undercover students to trucking schools across the province, what they found was alarming. In one case, students weren't trained to turn left. Reverse parking and emergency stops were skipped entirely. These are fundamental skills that every driver on the road needs to have.
25% of private trucking colleges were never inspected. And six unregistered schools were still booking road tests even after being investigated and penalized.
The province says it's taking action and that many of those operators have since been shut down. But the bigger question is how many drivers are already on the road with gaps in their training.
