If your marketing budget got tighter tomorrow, what would you keep?

And what would you cut first?

It sounds like a simple question until you actually try to answer it.

Would you keep the directory listing because you know it brings business — or because you’ve paid for it for six years?

Would you cut lead generation before looking at how quickly those leads are being followed up?

Would sales notice if a marketing activity disappeared?

And are there things you could keep doing that don’t require another dollar at all?

A tighter budget doesn’t automatically mean less marketing.

Sometimes it just forces you to get much clearer about what’s earning its place.

Keep what supports the business.
Measure what you’re unsure about.
Pause what isn’t performing.

And one of my favourites:

Spend with intention — not habit.

If you had to trim your marketing budget tomorrow, what would be the first thing you’d review?

“Don’t spend money on that yet.”

Probably not what you expect to hear from your marketing person. 😏

But sometimes it’s the right advice.

Maybe advertising isn’t the next move because the website needs work first.

Maybe generating more leads won’t help until there’s a better follow-up process.

Maybe that shiny new marketing idea sounds great… but it has absolutely nothing to do with what the business needs right now.

My job isn’t to find more places for you to spend your marketing budget.

It’s to help you figure out where it will actually make a difference — and where it won’t.

Sometimes good marketing means doing more.

Sometimes it means saying, “Not yet.”

What are you spending money on simply because you feel like you’re supposed to?

Sometimes the marketing problem… isn’t actually a marketing problem.
“We need more leads.”
“Our marketing isn’t converting.”
“We need more advertising.”
Maybe.

But before spending more, it’s worth asking a few harder questions:
Are leads being followed up properly?
Are quotes being chased?
Do customers clearly understand why they should choose you?
Can the business actually handle more demand?

Marketing can create attention and opportunity. But it can’t fix every issue that happens after the inquiry arrives.

The better question is:
What problem are we actually trying to solve?

Because sometimes the answer is more marketing.

And sometimes it’s better follow-up, clearer positioning, stronger sales or better systems.

Understand the business first. Then market it.

Sometimes the marketing problem… isn’t actually a marketing problem.

You don’t need more leads if nobody is following up with the ones you already have.

You don’t need more website traffic if your website doesn’t clearly explain what you do.

And you don’t need to post constantly on a platform your customers barely use.

Before spending more money or adding another tactic, look at the whole customer journey.

Where is the opportunity actually getting lost?

Because sometimes the smartest marketing decision is fixing what happens before or after the marketing.

Before you spend another marketing dollar, ask a few better questions first.
What are you actually trying to accomplish?
Where are your best customers coming from?
Where are opportunities getting lost?

And perhaps most importantly… what are you already paying for that may no longer be earning its place?

Good marketing isn’t about adding another tactic because everyone else is doing it.
Sometimes the smartest recommendation is to stop something, measure what’s happening, and put the budget somewhere more useful.

September has a way of changing the conversation.

Summer winds down, people get back into routines, budgets start getting attention again — and suddenly the question becomes:
“What should we be doing with our marketing?”

Before you decide what to post, advertise, redesign or spend money on, start with the business.
What does it actually need to accomplish between now and the end of the year?
More leads? More sales? Better awareness? A stronger pipeline heading into January?

When the goal is clear, the marketing decisions usually get a whole lot easier.

So, what does your business need to accomplish before December?

Doing your own marketing isn't the problem.

In fact, it's how many businesses get started.

The challenge comes when the business keeps growing... but the marketing doesn't grow with it.

I've seen it happen more times than I can count.

The website no longer reflects what the business actually does.

Social media gets squeezed in whenever there's time.

Different people are creating different messages.

Not because anyone is doing anything wrong—but because the business has outgrown the way marketing has always been handled.

That's what this week's carousel is about.

If any of these signs feel familiar, don't see them as problems.

See them as signs that your business has grown.

If you'd like to dig a little deeper into this idea, I've written a blog that explains why good businesses often outgrow their marketing—and what to do next.

💬 Which sign stood out to you the most?

Have you ever looked at your website and thought…

"That’s not really us anymore."

It’s a conversation I have more often than you might think.

Not because the business isn't doing well.

Because the business has grown.

New services.
New customers.
A bigger team.
A different direction.

But marketing has a funny way of standing still while everything else keeps moving.

Sometimes you don't need more marketing.

You simply need your marketing to reflect the business you've already become.

That's what this week's Penny's 2 Cents is about.

💬 Have you ever looked at your business and realized you've outgrown the way you talk about it?

Have you ever paid for marketing and walked away thinking, “Well… that didn’t do much”?

That feeling sticks with business owners. And understandably so.

But before I decide the answer is a new website, more social media, Google Ads or another campaign, I want to know what is actually happening in the business.

Who buys?
What slows a sale down?
What keeps a good customer?
What are you trying to accomplish?

And sometimes the most important one: what are you worried about?

Those answers usually tell me a lot more than “we need more leads.”

I pulled together seven of the questions I ask before I start talking about marketing.

Have a flip through—and tell me: has anyone ever taken the time to ask you these kinds of questions before recommending something?

I don't believe marketing creates great businesses.

I think it helps people discover them.

Over the years, I've worked with businesses in a lot of different industries, and I've noticed something...

The ones that keep growing aren't always the biggest.

They aren't always the ones spending the most on marketing.

They're the ones that know who they are, take care of their customers, and never stop looking for ways to improve.

Marketing simply helps tell that story.

That's what this week's Penny's 2 Cents is about.

I'd love to know...

What's one quality you think every great business has in common?
