Every Halloween, we make a point of delivering candy to our clients.
It's a small tradition we love, a nice chance to spread a few smiles and connect.
While I was out delivering the treats this year, our technicians were busy battling the tricks: back-to-back global outages from AWS and Microsoft Azure that left many businesses scrambling.
Earlier in the week, AWS ran into trouble when its DNS (Domain Name System) aka: the internet’s “phone book” that matches names to addresses — stopped resolving properly. That glitch caused many AWS-hosted services to vanish from reach, showing just how disruptive one broken link in the chain can be.
Yesterday, the Azure outage in particular impacted Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and many other cloud services worldwide. Even platforms apps and sites you wouldn’t associate with Microsoft but are built on were caught in the disruption. We quickly were alerted to the issue – but not before a flood of seemingly unrelated tickets sent everyone into Scooby-Doo mode to help solve this Halloween mystery. 👻
Thankfully, by end of day our technicians were seeing services restored.
Microsoft has since confirmed the issue is resolved but you may see some lingering affects.
If you’re still seeing odd behaviour, a few simple steps usually help:
• Log out and back in (surprisingly effective!)
• Restart your browser or app
• Clear your cache to refresh your session
Like a Scooby-Doo mystery, the problem wasn’t really a ghost in the machine — just global infrastructure showing that even the biggest names can and will stumble.
From large scale attacks to the simplest human error or configuration mistake. The sheer scale and complexity of the cloud assures that this wasn’t the first time and won’t be the last.
The bigger lesson? Outages happen, resilience comes from being prepared, and not assuming the internet is unshakable. And on the smaller scale, ensuring you have a business continuity backup ready to go, an up to date, tested disaster recovery plan and having a trusted IT partner in your corner will be key to riding out these storms.
At Avenir IT, we help you prepare and keep watch so your team can focus on running the business and enjoying the treats, not fighting the tricks.
Happy Halloween from all of us at Avenir IT 🎃
