A common mistake for people who have a Tax-Free Savings Account is to put too much cash in it! 💵

A bulk of cash doesn’t grow, it erodes with inflation, and it wastes the account’s tax-free potential. There are many investment options that will have a much better positive effect on your Tax-Free Savings Account than just holding cash. Ask your advisor about it!

Hi, I am JF Bernard and I like to make finance something everyone can understand. If you have any questions, leave a comment so I can answer you!

There is no upside to having multiple Tax-Free Savings Accounts. 🛑

If you have many different goals, instead of opening 2, 3, 4, or 5 accounts where you are more likely to get confused about whether you are overcontributing or undercontributing and end up paying more administration fees, you should open just one. That single account can have many different types of investments in it depending on your goals.

I’m JF Bernard, a financial advisor here in Canada. I’m here to make investing easier, so feel free to leave a comment if you want more clarity!

You probably made this mistake, and it’s to not have a Tax-Free Savings Account.

It’s easy to use and you get contribution room as soon as you hit 18 years old. Ideally, you want to find a budget to contribute to it every year.

Most people know about the Registered Retirement Savings Plan, and most will put their investments in that account while not thinking about how a Tax-Free Savings Account could be good for them.

My name is JF Bernard. I make finance easy to navigate. If you have any questions, go ahead and ask, I will respond!

Think of a TFSA as a container.
You get to decide what goes inside it.

Here are 3 smart ways to use your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA):

📈 1. Grow your wealth
Invest your money and let it grow tax-free over time.

🛟 2. Build an emergency fund
You can withdraw your money whenever you need it, completely tax-free.

👨‍👩‍👧 3. Leave more to your loved ones
With proper planning, the value of your TFSA can generally be passed on to your loved ones tax-free.

Fees are part of investing but confusion shouldn't be!

Before choosing any investment, you deserve to know: how much am I actually paying? What does that cover? And how does it come out of my pocket?

When nobody takes the time to explain that, it's easy to overpay without ever realizing it.

Do you know exactly what you're paying in investment fees?

Why « Changing Lanes » Costs You Money

The other day, I was driving my son to the zoo. We were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, just crawling along.

I saw the lane next to me start zooming ahead, so I did what everyone does: I switched! Of course, the second I moved, my old lane started flying and my new lane came to a dead stop.

Trying to save two minutes just left me frustrated and even further behind.

I see people do the exact same thing with their money. When the market gets a bit bumpy, it’s tempting to jump from one investment to another, hoping the « other lane » is moving faster. But honestly? Constantly switching usually just sets you back.

Whether you’re on the highway or building your savings, the fastest way to get where you’re going is to pick a good plan and stick with it.

In Canada, TFSA stands for Tax-Free Savings Account.

Simply put, it allows your investments to grow tax-free and lets you withdraw your money without paying tax on the gains.

For many Canadians, it’s one of the most powerful tools available for building long-term wealth.

Do you have any questions about the TFSA? Let me know in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.

It cannot be stressed enough: a good financial advisor should be able to answer all of your questions, even if you need to ask the same ones repeatedly.

Many people hesitate to speak up out of fear or embarrassment, don’t let that be you!

Clarity is your right, and a good advisor will always provide it.

How much are you actually paying your financial advisor? If you don’t know the exact number, it’s time to have a talk.

Fees are a critical part of your investment strategy. The goal is to keep them as low as possible. To do that, you need to understand the three main layers of costs:

-Advisor Compensation: This is the salary or commission paid to your advisor for their services.
-Investment Fees: These are management fees built into the products you own, such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.
-Administrative Fees: Most institutions charge these to cover account maintenance and tax document preparation.

Some firms bundle everything into one "all-in" number, while others break it down into several smaller line items. Regardless of the format, your advisor should be able to provide a clearly detailed annual summary of every dollar you paid.

Hey, I’m JF! I love taking the 'complicated' out of finance. Got a question? Drop a comment below and I’ll get back to you personally!
