Some cool history for our local area!
What was spotted flying over Meteghan, Nova Scotia on May 20, 1927?
It was the Spirit of St. Louis, the airplane piloted by Charles Lindbergh.
When Charles Lindberg left New York, at 7:52am that morning, many newspapers had already began reporting the tragic headlines of the "flying fool". The plane was heavily loaded with fuel and had barely cleared telephone wires at the end of the runway.
By the time of his last sighting off the coast of New England, they were preparing to print his obituary.
But at approximately 12:25 pm, the aircraft was spotted over Meteghan. That first sighting became a crucial confirmation that Lindbergh was still alive and on course to attempt the impossible: the world’s first nonstop solo transatlantic flight.
As reports spread that the Spirit of St. Louis had safely crossed to Nova Scotia and was heading out over the Atlantic, newspapers were forced to rethink their headlines and retract premature reports of disaster.
Roughly 21 hours later, Lindbergh landed safely at Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, and instantly became one of the most famous people on Earth.
For one brief moment in history, Meteghan became part of the story that changed aviation forever.
