I need to talk about Lindsay Clancy. Not the potential verdict, that's not mine to decide... I want to talk about what her case is dragging into the light about men, power, and patriarchy... who gets grace, and who gets a pile-on.
Here's something I've said on TikTok recently, and I'll say it again here because it matters more now: when I was 20 years old, a brand new mom, I had thoughts about shaking my baby. Not because I wanted to hurt him... Because I was drowning. I was overwhelmed. I was over-tired. I was scared.
My parents moved to the other side of the country when he was two months old, and I was a kid raising a kid. Postpartum depression doesn't care how much you love your baby. It just sits on your chest and tells you lies.
I said that out loud on camera, and you know who showed up in my comments? Women relating to my experience..... And men... A pile of them... Telling me I should be in jail. That I'd "admitted" to wanting to hurt my child. That I was dangerous, unstable, unfit. 🙄
The idiots didn't realize my son is 17 now. Spoiler alert: I didn't shake him. He just graduated high school at the top of his class, and was absolutely decorated with awards... Proving I clearly am NOT a terrible mom who needs to be locked up, lol.
Those thoughts I had, born out of exhaustion and fear, was never who I was. It was a symptom of a much bigger problem... But the men who enjoy the spoils of patriarchy don't actually want to understand postpartum depression, because it doesn't benefit them to understand it.
It's much more useful to their narrative that women are irrational, selfish, a little bit crazy. That narrative has been propping up control over women for centuries.
Look at what's happening right now with Clancy's case, women all over the country sharing their own postpartum experiences, finally being honest about the thoughts that scared them.... And look at who's responding to that honesty by calling to repeal the 19th Amendment. 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄
That's not a coincidence... And it's for reasons like this that I wrote my book Secrets of a Former S*x Worker.
I spent two years inside an industry that strips the performance off male/female dynamics, and teaches you first-hand how men actually think about women's roles, worth, and usefulness in relationships...
I wrote the book so other women could see it faster than I did, before it costs them the way it's costs so many women. Before patriarchy costs them the way it has cost Lindsay.
As a mother who dealt with PPD herself, I have firmly planted my two feet standing with Lindsay. I stand with mothers everywhere desperately reaching for help, being failed by a patriarchal system. ✌🏻
