GOOGLE DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR GOMA (DR. CONGO) free digital skills training. Kafeero Foundation has been sponsored by Centum Learning and Google to give free trainings in 15 African countries. This is part of an Africa Youth Empowerment Initiative by Google in order to equip the next generation of young business minds. In Uganda, Kafeero Foundation has partnered with Light House Television to share this opportunity with the young people. Africa today has a number of 340,783,342 million active Internet users and more than half a billion people across Africa now subscribe to mobile services, with the number expected to grow to 725 million by 2020. The growth of the mobile industry is also a boom for investors and governments, the GSMA report states. The use of mobile services and technologies directly contributed to $17 billion in government taxes in 2015. In general, mobile services generated 6.7% of the continent’s GDP, totaling around $150 billion in economic value. The mobile industry also directly and indirectly supported more than 3.8 million jobs. The 1.3 million direct jobs supported an additional 2.43 million indirect employment opportunities in the form of wages and public funding contributions. Youth unemployment rates are high across the region — 35% in South Africa, 17% in Kenya, 13% in Nigeria. This presents huge opportunities for African businesses and young digital entrepreneurs. Developing digital entrepreneurship and creating new job opportunities for young people is critical to Africa’s transformative growth. Google being the world’s largest online/most valuable company decided to create a platform that will help young Africans tap into the next biggest market (internet) by training 1million young people before 2020. The training is on Digital Skills and runs for 4 hours. This can however be adjusted to fit the setting of the training session. The following are the areas to be covered in the trainings; • Online Opportunities • Build Your Online Presence • Introduction to Online Advertising • Introduction to Mobile • Digital Job Opportunities With an expected half a billion internet users in Africa by 2020, there are huge oppor-tunities for African businesses and young digital entrepreneurs. If young people have the right skills, they can build businesses, create jobs and boost economic growth across the continent. We hope to equip a million young Africans (1835) with digital skills and tools to help them build an online presence, create content, understand web design and user experience, social media and app development.
