Central Africa is emerging as a key player in global battery mineral supply chains, led by the DRC and Zambia’s copper and cobalt production.

The region supplies around 70% of the world’s cobalt and produces millions of tonnes of copper each year, yet much of the value from refining and processing is still realised outside Africa. Governments and investors are now pushing to change this through local processing, infrastructure investment and policy reform.

The challenge remains ex*****on — particularly energy availability and project financing.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is expanding its copper export strategy, with new shipments set for Saudi Arabia and the UAE through a US backed partnership with Mercuria. The initiative signals a broader shift toward diversifying trade routes and strengthening alliances beyond traditional markets.

With 50,000 tonnes of copper earmarked for Middle Eastern markets and additional volumes already committed to the US, the move highlights a growing geopolitical contest over critical mineral supply chains.

As global demand for copper intensifies, how will evolving trade partnerships reshape influence, investment flows and long-term value creation across Africa’s mining sector?
