You know what happens to your art if the gallery Exhibiting it goes bankrupt? 🏛️ Most artists think: “Well, it’s my art, I just go there and pick it up.” WRONG. ❌

If you do not have a strict Consignment Agreement stating that the artwork remains your exclusive property until paid in full... the gallery’s debt collectors can legally seize YOUR paintings to pay off the gallery’s debts.

Yes, this happens. A verbal agreement or an Instagram DM won’t save you in court. Corporate galleries have expensive lawyers protecting them. Who is protecting you?

The “Contract Test”. 📝 When someone slides into your DMs saying “I love your work, I want a custom piece!”, it’s easy to get excited. But 50% of these people will disappear when it’s time to pay.

How do you filter out the window-shoppers? You send them a Commission Agreement. When you say: “I’d love to do this. I’ll send over the agreement and the invoice for the 50% deposit so we can start.”

❌ The time-wasters will make excuses.
✅ The serious collectors (and Interior Designers) will respect you more, because it proves you are a professional vendor, not a hobbyist.

Let’s do some math. 🧮 You charge $1,000 for a custom commission. You estimate it will take you 20 hours. That is $50/hour. Great!

But wait... you didn’t sign a contract.
The client changes their mind. They want a different color. They want 5 “minor” revisions. Suddenly, you’ve spent 60 hours on the piece.

You are now making $16/hour. You aren’t running an art business; you are doing volunteer work. 🛑

An Instagram DM is not a legal boundary. If you don’t require a 50% Non-Refundable Deposit and a strict ‘Revision Limit’ in writing, clients will drain your energy.

Corporate designers use contracts. You should too.
