🏔️🌍 Meet the latest GEO Mountains Small Grants recipients!

Eight new projects have been selected for support through the GEO Mountains Small Grants Programme 2026-2027, spanning mountain regions across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Their work will tackle some of the persistent data gaps facing mountain research, from rescuing historical climate records and improving glacier observations to connecting fragmented monitoring networks and tracking changes in high-mountain biodiversity.

The projects also show the many different things a Small Grant can help unlock: new datasets and monitoring, open tools and resources, training opportunities, stronger regional collaboration, and research that can inform policy and decision-making.

We warmly congratulate all eight project teams and look forward to seeing where their work leads! 🎉

GEO Mountains Small Grants are made possible through the appreciated support of Swiss Development & Cooperation (SDC) and the Mountain Research Initiative, as part of the Adaptation at Altitude Programme.

🏔️🛰️ Turning Earth observation into action

How can the next generation of mountain researchers and practitioners use Earth observation to tackle real-world challenges?

At the GEO Mountains Youth Ideathon 2026, twelve early-career researchers and practitioners from across the world came together in Obergurgl, Austria, for a week of hands-on learning, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Working alongside experts and partner organisations, participants developed practical solutions to four disaster risk reduction challenges, spanning landslide risk, safer hydropower, land degradation, and Indigenous Earth observation.

From remote sensing and rock glaciers to policy briefs and prototype solutions, the Ideathon was all about connecting data, knowledge, and people to support more resilient mountain futures.

Today marks the end of this marathon. Twelve early-career professionals from mountain regions around the world came together. They tackled disaster risk and mountain-related challenges, combined Earth Observation with local knowledge, prototyped solutions and shared them with the wider community. But this is just the beginning: the connections made, the skills built, the solutions designed, will continue beyond Obergurgl.

As each participant is on their way home, we would like to thank our GEO Mountains Coordinator Alexandrine Massot, Samuel Amos and Rui Kotani, from the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), for their collaboration on developing the programme. We sincerely thank all our participants for their dedicated energy and efforts, all of the experts and problem-owners, who accompanied the participants and contributed to making this experience "challenging" for each group. A special thanks for their support, coaching and availability to the groups: Beihang University, Slope Risk GPT, WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies, Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern, Institut des sciences de l'environnement (ISE) - UNIGE, Adaptation at Altitude, Universität Innsbruck, GEO Indigenous Alliance, Space4Innovation, Alpine Convention, IAG International Association of Geodesy.

A special thanks to the organisers, especially Wolfgang Gurgiser, for their wonderful organisation, support, and connexion made with the regional partners.

This programme was made possible thanks to the support of the Direction du développement et de la coopération.

We're looking forward to the outputs of this international collaboration. The solutions will be shared on our website, via the MRI Newsletter, and via the different GEO platforms.

Keep posted for discovering the great work that has been achieved this week!

. And so does the next generation working to protect them. 🏔️

Excited to share that our session "Youth-led Data Solutions for Mountain Disaster Risk Reduction" took place today at the Regional Mountain Conference 2026 in Obergurgl!

After three intensive days of work, participants had the opportunity to present their solution designs to the RMC audience. Each group had 15 minutes to present their approach to the challenge, the methodology used, and to demonstrate their prototype. This was followed by an engaging exchange with the audience about their results.

Once this major milestone was completed, participants moved into a "regional exchange" session, where they grouped by geographical region and discussed the transferability and replicability of the presented solutions in their respective mountain areas, identifying potential barriers and opportunities.

Finally, we also had the opportunity to present the ideathon concept at the plenary session of . Samuel Amos delivered an inspiring talk on the importance of building connections to protect mountain ecosystems and the vital role of youth in fostering long-term relationships that turn data into dialogue to create innovative solutions leading to action. The keynote concluded with testimonials from several participants sharing their key take-home messages.

Stay tuned to discover in more detail each of the solutions developed during the GEO Mountains Ideathon 2026!

🧊📸 Sometimes the key to understanding the future lies in the past.

A GEO Mountains Small Grant has supported researchers in digitising more than 4,500 historical aerial photographs of glaciers in the Chilean Andes – some dating back to the 1940s.

Using these images, the team is developing new open-source tools to reconstruct glacier surfaces in 3D and build glacier elevation records spanning nearly eight decades.

The project demonstrates how historical archives, international collaboration, and open science can help answer some of today's most pressing climate questions.

🎯 GEO Mountains Youth Ideathon Day 3: Solutions taking shape

Today, participants worked in teams to refine and strengthen their design solutions. Each group adopted its own approach: some focused on individual reflection before coming together, while others chose to collaborate continuously. Discussions unfolded both outdoors in the fresh mountain air and indoors, making the most of different environments to stimulate creativity.

In the afternoon, Felix Gertheinrich and Raphaël Lelouvier from the Alpine Convention Secretariat led an inspiring workshop on the role of policy in mountain governance. Participants explored how scientific knowledge can be translated into concrete, actionable policy recommendations, gaining hands-on experience in developing a policy brief.

⚡ Day 2: From challenges to solutions

This morning our Problem-Owners, Lingfeng He from Beihang University , Diana Mastraci from GEO Indigenous Alliance, Joana Eichenberger from WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies, Yan Zhong from Université de Genève, presented four mountain challenges: transforming multi-source observations into actionable knowledge for landslide risk reduction, integrating hazard and exposure assessment for safer hydropower development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, evidence-based decision support for land degradation neutrality, and Indigenous-led Earth observations for watershed stewardship and human-wildlife coexistence. These challenges connect Group on Earth Observations Work Programme activities, GEO Participating Organisation and Adaptation at Altitude partners around mountain issues to deliver actionable information for decision-making.

Participants spent the day in intense solution design: defining problems, identifying users, mapping data sources, and building workflows. This afternoon they refined their concepts directly with the problem owners, getting critical feedback to continue improving their solutions design tomorrow.
