As the United Arab Emirates ponders whether it will be the first Gulf state to legalize gambling, moves by the casino industry indicate a certain level of optimism.

Senior government officials say there are no imminent plans to allow gambling, but casino operators, consultants and lawyers familiar with the matter say there have been early discussions and a change is being considered. Wynn Resorts Ltd., the Las Vegas-based hotel and casino operator, last week unveiled details of a planned $3.9 billion gaming resort in the country, without explicitly saying that it would involve gambling.

Other casino operators have held informal discussions with UAE authorities about gambling, according to an executive at a gaming consultant and a UAE government official, who declined to be identified because the talks are private. Some are scouting for hotels to locate casinos, according to an official at a gaming equipment supplier.

The stakes are high. The UAE could pull in as much as $6.6 billion of gaming revenue annually and eventually surpass Singapore, home to the renowned Marina Bay Sands resort, according to Angela Hanlee, a senior gaming and hospitality analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence.

“Dubai and other emirates have the potential to be transformed into bustling leisure-gambling markets,” she said. Casino-related tourism could emerge as an “important driver of the UAE’s economy as the country tries to reduce its heavy reliance on oil.”

An existing partnership between Novo Interactive's AdmiralBet and German football club Hamburger SV - also known as HSV - has been extended until 30 June 2024.

AdmiralBet has been the exclusive sports betting partner of Hamburger SV since 2019.

As part of the extension, AdmiralBet will provide content to Hamburger SV’s digital channels, which will include its AdmiralBet series.

AdmiralBet branding will also be present on video and LED boards at Hamburger SV’s home stadium, Volkparkstadion.

Additionally, during the second half of the club’s season, AdmiralBet and Hamburger SV will operate the AdmiralBet numbers game, an interactive tool where fans can test their knowledge of Hamburger SV on match days and compete with friends.

Swedish Gambling Regulator Reveals Suspected Match-Fixing Reports Mostly Related to Football. The Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, has released data on suspicious betting activity for the period from February 2022 to December 2022.

According to the data, obtained through an agreement with Sportradar AG, the regulator received reports that 11 sporting contests were highly likely to have been exposed to some form of match-fixing activity. Each reported incident involved football matches but none of theses were in the country’s top leagues.

Spelinspektionen’s report also notes that gambling operators reported all suspicious activity for the previous years which was then aggregated by Sportradar. The reports revealed 53 suspicious bets during 24 different matches throughout 2021. 19 of these matches were football matches while the others included basketball, ice hockey, tennis, and bandy.

2020 saw a total of 45 suspicious betting events during 27 matches.

Spelinspektionen did not provide any further details on any action that may be taken to address and potential suspicious activity nor did it name the matches that match-fixing may have taken place in.

Furthermore, the report demonstrated the shifting difference in crypto spending vs cash, with 44% of bets placed in Q3 2021 being crypto-based. However, in Q3 2022, this figure had vastly decreased to 29%.

The reasons for this could be rooted in the cost-of-living crisis, which has affected how much people are willing to risk money by putting it into crypto – meaning more people are just placing bets in traditional fiat currencies.

Operator WinSpirit Casino has partnered with slots provider AmigoGaming. The deal comes after WinSpirit Casino expanded its portfolio of games with new slots titles including Blazing Crown and Amigo Monkey.

These new titles join a selection of over 2,500 slots available at WinSpirit Casino, from a range of suppliers. The operator also runs a sports betting section. Both WinSpirit Casino and AmigoGaming have spoken of the mutually beneficial terms their cooperation brings.

Betfred USA now licensed to operate Virgin Hotels Las Vegas sportsbook. Betfred USA has won the licence to operate the sportsbook at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, after the Nevada Gaming Control Board recommended the state select the operator.

The partnership between Betfred USA and the casino, which is owned and operated by Mohegan Sun, was facilitated by Stephen Crystal, SCCG Management CEO and Founder.

The gambling consultancy, which Crystal heads, is the business development arm of Betfred USA.

SCCG Management has facilitated deals that have made Nevada the 10th state in which Betfred USA operates. The sports betting brand is also live in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Virginia and Maryland.

The company adds that it has development partnership plans for the Betfred USA brand in other states too, including Alabama, California, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Earlier this week, SCCG Management launched an Asia-facing arm, SCCG Asia.

Per the launch, SCCG Asia will open a new office in Bangkok, Thailand, which will be led by Kent Jenkins as Director of the new operation. The expansion will aim to provide management advisory services to casino, iGaming, sports betting and esports firms in Asia.

SCCG also says it will provide solutions and resources for existing partners aiming for entry into Asian markets. In November 2022, SCCG Management signed an investment partnership with Bettor Fantasy, bringing betting on fantasy sports matchups to the North American market.
