Quick trip to Upstate NY to attend the Colgate AJGA and visit Syracuse, Colgate, Hamilton, and Cornell. I felt like I went back in time in Hamilton, NY, and it’s the cutest town ever!

I’ve had students attend all three of these universities and play golf so I’ve been curious to see these campuses for a long time. They all have a lot to offer, and each has their own charm. Getting to these campuses does require some driving, and they are not as close together as I initially thought. Each trip teaches me more about the universities that are out there, what coaches are looking for, and the challenges that families face in the recruiting process.

While I was there, I met with some junior golf families. If you’re a 2027 still looking for a place to play, keep emailing coaches and make the effort to see if there’s a place for you. Coaches are still recruiting for your class! For 2028s and younger, book a discovery call to learn how I assist families with this process.

Another really exciting part of the week is I will get to visit the Colgate, Cornell, and Hamilton campuses. I am especially excited about this because all three will be new to me, and I have sent students to all three schools! This is also my LAST IVY to visit. After Cornell, I will have seen them all ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅!

So I’d love to crowdsource any places and restaurants that I should visit while I’m there. Please comment or DM with hot spots I can’t miss.

As a junior golfer, it can be tempting to want to control what you shoot and try to play well when coaches watch you. Unfortunately, your score is one of the things that you can’t control in this process.

What you can control are the following: your attitude, your mindset, your energy, your body language, how you fuel yourself (both eating and drinking), and how you prepare for tournament rounds.

If you do have the opportunity to have a coach come evaluate your game, then it can be very easy to feel nervous and want to shoot a low number to impress them. A simple reframe would be to look at this as something to be thankful for. Have gratitude that of all the junior golfers in the world, they are coming to watch you.

Good luck to my students and all the junior golfers out there playing in July. It’s a big month, and I can’t wait to see how you do.

Pre-read details part ✌️! Elite academic schools are in the process of gathering items from their prospective student-athletes and can bring profiles to admissions as early as tomorrow, July 1st.

Coaches approach this process differently based on directives from the admissions department. Some universities will bring up to 20 prospects to be evaluated while others may only bring their top 1-2. It’s a wide range so a good question to ask coaches is how many other students are getting pre-reads.

Remember to express gratitude even if you’re hoping to hear back from additional coaches. Coaches will likely be reading over your materials and can tell how serious you are about their program based on the quality of your responses if there’s a writing sample component or a “why our school” question.

For those of you who are in the pre-read process or hope to be, make sure that you download any necessary documents like graded writing samples off of Google Classroom before your teachers take them down.

Golfers: put an AirTag in your luggage! We’ve all had that sinking feeling when our golf bag or clothes don’t make it to our final destination.

Do you know what can make things a little bit better? Knowing WHERE in the world your prized possessions could be hiding. Sometimes the airlines don’t know so you need to help them!

Knowledge is power for a number of reasons. You can plan ahead by buying extra clothing if you know your bag won’t make it (save your receipts to expense these to the airlines). You can get rental clubs (not ideal, but desperate times). You know exactly when your clubs will make it to you if you have a quick turnaround and need to coordinate a different drop location.

I also pack a carry on with at least two sets of clothes and toiletries. My favorite reason for this was I had to give an 8 am presentation in my plane sweatpants after a delayed 4 am arrival with no luggage. I’ll never make that mistake again. 💪

Happy 1st day of the U.S. Open! Fun to see so many current and former college golfers in the field. May you find many fairways and greens!

Happy June 15th to the Class of 2028!

Some 2028 players may hear from 20+ coaches, and others may hear crickets. 🦗 As in, you may not hear from a single coach. It’s a tough day to prepare for because you’re not sure what to expect.

I’ve now lived through June 15th on the advising side for eight years. Prior to that, I had lived through two seasons as a coach after the rules changed. What I’ve observed is players in the top-50 to 100 in their class get lots of interest.

Others are just beginning their recruitment journey and should focus on shooting lower scores and playing in bigger tournaments before reaching out to coaches. Many 2028s won’t get recruited until next summer so you have lots of time!

Is June 15th a day that you’ve been anticipating for a while?

Every year, I have students who hear from a lot of coaches, and I have students who don’t hear from any. It’s hard to predict the outreach you’ll receive.

Much of what happens on June 15th depends on your ranking and body of work so if you’re still in the building phase, then focus on shooting better scores and adding to your resume.

If you do anticipate hearing from lots of coaches, then have a plan.
1. Reach out to coaches prior to June 15th so that they have a way to contact you and know that you’re interested
2. Create a spreadsheet to track who contacted you and when and include a column for follow up tasks
3. Prepare your questions so that you sound thoughtful and READY for these conversations (for tips, watch my two previous videos)
