AGUASAN is one of the longest-standing Communities of Practice of specialists in WASH in Swiss international cooperation. SKAT has served as its focal point, continuously leading its annual workshops since their inception in 1984.

We're reaching out to anyone who fulfills any of these criteria:
• WASH practitioners with experience in humanitarian or development cooperation, or experience working in contexts with refugee and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) influx
• professionals based in Uganda, any of its neighbouring countries, or the Horn of Africa, or have work experience in this region
• professionals with experience working within the Humanitarian-Development-Peace-Nexus or experienced with system strengthening approaches
• someone who participated in last year’s workshop

⚡🧱🌍Temperatures are dropping! 🌡️❄️ How can homes stay warm in winter - and cool in summer? In Moldova, we support a project that successfully addresses this challenge.
After a comprehensive assessment of the most effective energy efficiency measures, the findings are being shared through a nationwide communication campaign. The campaign provides tailored information for various stakeholders, including homeowners, craftsmen, and government bodies.
Practical guides, flyers, booklets, and videos form the core of the initiative, supplemented by seminars and information events held across the country. These materials are distributed via Facebook, local media channels, and on-the-ground activities to ensure wide reach.
This Energy Efficiency (EnEff) project, funded by the Swiss Development & Cooperation (SDC), is designed to support rural Moldovan communities in becoming more resilient to the energy crisis while improving living conditions. We are proud to provide our expertise, together with our local team Mă Implic - Proiect de implicare civică în guvernarea locală and partners, to create a meaningful and lasting impact.

We’re relocating to a new office! After more than 30 years in the same location, Skat is moving just one street over to Pestalozzistrasse 2 in St. Gallen.

𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗸𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗮
I joined Skat in 2020 as a part-time Content & Communication Manager for the Mă Implic - Proiect de implicare civică în guvernarea locală and am now honored to continue in Phase 2 as a full-time Strategic Communication Manager. My background in hospitality and event management as well as in business communication add much value to my role, especially with the project's focus on stakeholder participatory exchanges and knowledge sharing.
Effective communication and well-organized events are vital for building connections, promoting transparency, and driving engagement. I particularly enjoy event management, communication training, and creating innovative communication products. This role has been a rewarding journey of learning and growth, and I am honored to be part of the Skat Consulting team.

𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘆, 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲, 𝗦𝗸𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱
I lived in Central Asia until I was 16 and I was intimately familiar with the struggles of dealing with an inadequate supply of water at home. Having experienced first-hand the great lengths my family and others went to collect, purify, and store water in part led me to study water resources engineering and development practice.
My desire is for people everywhere to receive water that gives life. At Skat Consulting, I spend much of my time organising events such as an upcoming AGUASAN workshop on the WASH humanitarian-development nexus, as well as coordinating the 1 Million Youth Actions Challenge, which mobilises young people to implement concrete actions for a more sustainable future.

📢 🌍 We have signed contracts for two new exciting projects in Moldova:

The 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗦𝗮𝗻𝟮𝟴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 project is a new initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation in rural Moldova, set to be completed in 2028 (hence the name ApaSan𝟮𝟴). Building on the successes of previous ApaSan projects, this new initiative funded with EUR 6 million by the Austrian Development Agency will enhance access to safe drinking water and sustainable decentralised sanitation systems and strengthen the capacity of operators and municipalities.

The project for 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗮 will support communities in Moldova to cope with the additional challenges resulting from the crisis caused by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, such as stress on water supply systems from increasing population and and soaring energy costs affecting budgets of municipalities and people. The project is funded by the Swiss Development & Cooperation with CHF 2.7 million as an additional component to our long-term local governance project Mă Implic - Proiect de implicare civică în guvernarea locală.

🌍 🌟 Who is Skat? 🌟 🌍 We’re excited to continue our journey of introducing the amazing individuals at Skat Consulting. Today, we shine the spotlight on two more team members who bring extensive knowledge and enthusiasm to our mission.

𝗥𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗷𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶, 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗞𝗼𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗼

Since 2020, I have been engaged with Skat as a Senior Advisor on Water Resources Management, as one of the leaders of the Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo (IWRM-K) Program. In a water-stressed country like Kosovo, addressing various water management issues such as planning, use optimisation and pollution control, is quite a challenge. Our comprehensive integrated approach to addressing these challenges emphasises stakeholder involvement and integrates all relevant factors. Notably, we are pioneering implementation of certain activities, including the development of River Basin Management Plans in Kosovo, a first for the country. Hence, my team and I are privileged to play a key role in these ground-breaking developments.

𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱

I promote knowledge management and facilitate learning within RésEAU, the global network of water practitioners of the Swiss Development & Cooperation, in collaboration with a pool of experts from Skat, Helvetas Schweiz and Zoï Environment Network. Based on my studies in development cooperation and my 13 years working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in conflict areas, I also lead Skat’s initiatives in humanitarian aid. This includes for example designing and advising on water system and housing reconstruction programmes in Ukraine. I am a strong supporter of participatory approaches, like cash-based modalities, as they allow to actively involve and empower beneficiary populations and create sustainable impact.

China will soon publish its Zero Emission Building (ZEB) Standard - an initiative with enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gar emissions. Under the lead of our Wesley Wojtas, Skat Consulting together with Intep - Integrale Planung GmbH supported the development of this new and innovative national ZEB standard in China, funded by the Swiss Development & Cooperation

The ZEB China team and additional experts like Adrian Altenburger, Daniel Kellenberger and Martin Ménard visited China to meet with stakeholders from policy, industry and academia to discuss the rapid implementation of the standard in practice. The photos were taken during exchanges in Shanghai, and Wuxi where two of the ZEB demonstration projects are located. Further demonstration projects are located in Beijing, Harbin, Shaanxi, Shaoxing, Shenzhen, and Taixing to increase visibility of zero-emission building solutions across China in four climate zones.

💦🌱 In the water stressed Ferghana Valley of northern Tajikistan, 90% of water use is attributed to agricultural purposes. In this context, introducing water-efficient irrigation technologies, such as drip irrigation, is a necessary step in reducing pressures on regional water resources. The Swiss Development & Cooperation is financing projects in the region to support farmers as they improve irrigation practices and turn the valley into a green oasis.

Our Lucien Bl**er and Rachel Hershey evaluated drip irrigation systems as well as school sanitation facilities and hospital wastewater treatment sites installed in the Ferghana Valley, providing expert advice for improving the quality of infrastructure and project approaches. They say, "It is inspiring to see the competence, perseverance, and impact of the teams in Tajikistan as they work in a challenging environment. Getting to know them, in-person, was a highlight of our visit."

🚽In a collaborative workshop with project teams from across the country, our backstopping team facilitated the identification of synergies and co-creation of solutions to common challenges faced in institutional sanitation.

Skat Consulting supports several water and sanitation projects through our backstopping mandate to the Swiss Cooperation in Tajikistan. Whether in policy dialogue, project implementation, or knowledge management, the focus is to ensure quality and to strengthen synergies between projects across the Swiss water portfolio in Tajikistan.

🌍🧱 Wang Hui, Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, led a delegation of high-level policy makers to Switzerland learning about Swiss zero-emission buildings, innovations as well as advanced technology and policy experience. The global construction sector accounts for about 1/3 of greenhouse gas emissions and China's construction sector is the largest in the world. Therefore, the potential to reduce emissions from the Chinese building sector is unprecedent and the Chinese government is committed to increase efforts to reduce embodied and operational emissions of buildings and cities.

The Swiss Development & Cooperation finances a project on Zero Emission Buildings in China to facilitate the exchange of know-how and best practices between China and Switzerland. It is implemented by Skat Consulting with our Wesley Wojtas as team-leader together with Intep - Integrale Planung GmbH and backstoppers from EMPA and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU).

The visit of the Chinese Delegation to Switzerland included bilateral talks with Patricia Danzi, Director General of SDC, Christian Frutiger, Vice Director General of SDC, Benoît Revaz, Director General of Swiss Federal Office of Energy and more. In addition, we were happy to be received by Peter Richner, Deputy Director of EMPA, at NEST. We are happy to facilitate the Sino-Swiss exchange for a climate-friendly building sector.
