IS GOLD ENOUGH?

A gold bar can be genuine and still be counterfeit.

Modern counterfeiters are no longer limited to fake metals. They can replicate refinery branding, forge documentation, and create false provenance claims, making it increasingly important to verify more than composition alone.

The future of precious metals trust requires multiple layers of verification:

• Material verification

• Product authentication

• Provenance & traceability

What are the solutions for fighting against the gray market?

To combat the gray market, each of your products must have a unique identifier so that you can pinpoint the reseller who secretly sold to another distributor in another country. You could use a unique serial number, but even if it is in UV ink, the reseller will erase it. There are high-end forensic technologies available, but you will need to visit a lab to find out who this reseller is.

There are two technologies that exist today. AlpVision Fingerprint uses a picture of the unique feature of the carton in order to identify it. The other technology we offer is AlpVision Cryptoglyph, which uses an invisible inkjet variable pattern on your existing printing process. These are the solutions that will not be erasable and will be undetectable to gray marketers.

Counterfeit Products: Examples, Impact, and Solutions

Counterfeit products have moved far beyond cheap knockoffs. They now closely replicate packaging, branding, and even product performance, making them difficult to detect across industries, from consumer goods and electronics to pharmaceuticals and automotive parts. If fake products can look and feel this real, how can you tell the difference?

Detecting Counterfeit Goods

Counterfeit goods rarely appear only at the point of sale.

They can infiltrate the supply chain through unauthorized distributors, diversion, and tampered packaging, which happen often long before products ever reach consumers.

Smartphone-based authentication can verify products in real time throughout the supply chain, changing how companies detect and respond to counterfeit activity at scale.

What is the gray market?

The gray market is not counterfeiting, it is a very different problem.

The gray market, for example, is when you have a perfume that is sold at a lower cost in Asia, and the distributors in Asia are going to resell it in Germany because of the price difference. The reseller is going to make much more profit, but he does not have the right to sell this product in Germany. This hurts the other reseller of the brand.

In the next video entitled, ‘What are the solutions for fighting against the gray market?’, I will discuss this phenomenon which is called gray market, or parallel trading.

5 Types of Brand Abuse

• Counterfeiting
• Grey market diversion
• Fake websites
• Social media impersonation
• Intellectual property theft

Modern brand protection extends far beyond fake products alone.

As digital and physical threats continue to evolve, brands increasingly require a combination of authentication, monitoring, enforcement, and supply chain visibility.

White Paper: The Connected Product

Digitization is reshaping how products are manufactured, distributed, and verified. Serialization, connected systems, and analytics are now standard components of modern supply chains, yet visibility alone does not guarantee authenticity.

In our latest white paper, we explore how traceability and physical authentication must function as complementary layers within digital ecosystems.

Inside, we examine:

• Why serialization alone cannot fully prevent misuse or counterfeiting.
• Where digitization introduces new security gaps
• How physical and digital verification intersect.
• Common threat patterns across supply chains
• Practical challenges in implementing integrated protection systems.

For brand owners navigating compliance, digital transformation, and product integrity, this paper provides a structured framework to assess where authentication adds measurable value.

Can we use AI to distinguish between genuine and fake?

If a human can tell the difference, then yes, AI can be used to distinguish between genuine and fake products.

In practice, it is not so simple because neural networks need to be trained. To do this, it is necessary to obtain a high number of counterfeits and genuine products to cover the whole variability. This can be difficult.

This means that using AI to perform verification is not obvious. However, this does not prevent from using AI for specific operations of the verification process.
