🌊 Around 470 million tonnes of cargo move through EU inland waterways every year.

Almost none of it is electrified. Yet.

Inland waterway vessels, from push tugs and cargo barges to river cruise ships and passenger ferries, operate on defined routes with predictable energy profiles. They return to home ports or fixed waypoints regularly, creating natural windows for planned charging. And they operate in some of the most emissions-sensitive environments in Europe: urban waterways, UNESCO-protected river valleys, ecologically sensitive inland waters where diesel exhaust and noise have real and measurable impact.

European inland waterway regulations are tightening. The CCNR's emissions roadmap targets a 35% cut in greenhouse gases and pollutants by 2035, and near-zero emissions by 2050. National governments are launching fleet transition programmes. Several battery-electric inland vessels are already in commercial operation across European river networks.

42% of Europe's rail network has no overhead wire. 🛤️

On those lines, diesel traction has been the default for decades.

The constraint is economic. On low-traffic and rural lines, the cost of extending overhead wire rarely pays for itself. The communities those lines serve still need rail, but that infrastructure spend cannot always be justified.

Battery-electric and hybrid trains offer a different approach. On electrified sections, they draw from the overhead supply. On non-electrified stretches, the on-board battery provides traction power, bridging the gaps between electrified sections without the need to string new catenary along them.

This is no longer experimental. Battery trains are running in regular passenger service on national networks in a growing number of European countries, and the pipeline from rail authorities and rolling stock manufacturers keeps expanding.

👉 Battery rail is not the future of non-electrified routes. It is already the present.

Fixed routes. Predictable energy. Perfect fit.

Roll-on/roll-off vessels are among the strongest candidates for hybrid battery electrification, and the reason is operational predictability.

Fixed routes mean the energy demand profile is known before departure.

Regular port calls create defined recharging windows. High utilisation - these vessels run around the clock, means fuel and maintenance savings compound significantly over a 20-year operating life.

Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax operators face the same regulatory pressure as passenger ferry operators, with the added complexity of larger installed power requirements and stricter safety standards for vessels carrying cargo and passengers simultaneously.

Several major operators have already moved beyond the single-vessel pilot. Hybrid battery systems are now being deployed across entire fleets - demonstrating that the technology scales from a proof of concept to a programmatic fleet approach.

Short-sea cargo shipping is one of the most significant sources of European maritime emissions. Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax hybridisation is one of the most immediate and scalable tools available to address it.

In the April issue of Advanced Maritime Technology International, our Technical E-Marine Manager, Tunji Adebusuyi, explains why Leclanché designs and builds its own cells rather than sourcing them, giving full control over quality, longevity and performance.

For marine duty cycles such as peak shaving, fuel-cell buffering and spinning reserve, power matters as much as energy.

Our cells are specified for at least 2.5C discharge to suit these demanding profiles.

50,000 ferries operate globally. Most still run on diesel, and a significant portion on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), which carries a substantially higher emissions burden than standard marine diesel.⛽

That is changing, and the commercial case is driving it as much as the regulatory one.

Hybrid battery propulsion on short-route ferry operations typically reduces fuel consumption by 15–30% depending on route profile.

It eliminates idling at berth entirely - one of the least efficient and most polluting phases of any vessel's operation. It cuts running hours on main engines, reducing maintenance costs over the vessel's service life.

The IMO's decarbonisation targets require international shipping to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% against 2008 levels by 2030. EU port regulations are progressively mandating shore power and penalising vessels that cannot reduce emissions at berth.

Fully electric and hybrid ferries are operating on commercial routes today using Leclanché battery systems - across Scandinavia, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, North Sea, and the Great Lakes of North America. 🔋

👉 The hybrid ferry is not the future of short-sea passenger shipping. It is the present, and the environmental and commercial case are the same case.

That's the volume of emissions our energy storage systems have helped avoid across the marine and transport projects now in operation.

The principle is straightforward: replace fossil-fuel propulsion with high-performance battery systems built for demanding, safety-critical environments. Every vessel and every train running on stored energy instead of diesel cuts emissions, day after day.

👉 Decarbonising heavy transport isn't about a single breakthrough. It's about reliable systems, proven in real-world deployment, adding up over time.
