We’re proud to share that Leclanché has been selected as one of six pioneering EV battery manufacturing projects to receive funding under the European Commission Innovation Fund, for a total of €852 million awarded across Europe! 🔋

Our Willstätt Gigafactory project in Germany stood out for its water-based and PFAS-free cell manufacturing process, a sustainable and scalable technology evaluated as “high-quality” by independent experts.

This recognition marks a major milestone in our mission to accelerate clean, competitive, and resilient battery production within Europe.

The next step is the Grant agreement with CINEA, which is expected in Q3 2025. The project launch is set for January 2026.

These certifications are a significant milestone in our journey to accelerate clean marine propulsion and provide flexible, high-energy solutions for all vessel types—from ferries and cargo ships to luxury yachts.

Last month marked the third anniversary of the Yara Birkeland—the world's first fully electric and autonomous container vessel! 🔋 🚢

Operated by Yara International, the ship transports fertilisers that enhance crop yields and sustainability from its production facility in Porsgrunn to the port of Brevik.

Since its launch, the Yara Birkeland has completed over 250 voyages, replacing approximately 35,000 diesel-powered truck journeys and reducing CO₂ emissions by 1,000 tonnes annually ♻️

Powered by Leclanché's advanced MRS-2 marine battery system, this vessel exemplifies the future of sustainable shipping!

This collaboration brings transformative opportunities, including:
✅ Up to CHF 360 million in funding through a Joint Venture
✅ Expansion of our Willstätt production facility to 2 GWh/yr
✅ Investment in a new 2 GWh/yr production facility in the Middle East
✅ 50/50 Joint Venture focused on battery production for heavy-duty

⚠️Leclanché has joined the call for the European Commission to recognise corporate power purchase agreements and guarantees of origin in carbon footprint rules!⚠️

✅ We support battery manufacturers by calling for corporate energy procurement tools like renewable PPAs and GOs to be recognised in the EV Battery Delegated Act’s carbon footprint methodology.

✅ This is an important precedent in EU law to incentivise private financing of wind and solar as well as industry decarbonisation.

✅ The Delegated Act must be amended to recognise investments which corporates are making to decarbonise and ensure that only truly sustainable products are sold in the EU.
