To Build a Top Performing Team, Ask for 85% Effort
Maximum effort does not equal maximum results. By adopting the 85% rule, managers can reduce stress and improve team performance.
🔀 Notions like "No pain, no gain" or "Give it 110%!" don't hold true in reality. They unintentionally create a toxic contradiction by expecting employees to work long hours while offering wellness activities to combat stress.
⛔️ Toxicity Breeds Burnout: The burnout epidemic won't be solved with wellness apps. Toxic workplace behavior is the biggest predictor of burnout. A new management mindset can actually bring out the best in people without burning them out.
🚀 The 85% Rule: Counterintuitively, reaching maximum output requires refraining from maximum effort. Operating at 100% all the time leads to burnout and suboptimal results. Think of sprinters: pushing for 100% too soon slows them down.
How to build a high-performing team without sacrificing well-being:
1️⃣ Create a "done for the day" time: Establish a reasonable hard stop for the workday to avoid decision fatigue and diminishing returns.
2️⃣ Ask for a little less than maximum capacity: Invite team members to work slightly below their perceived maximum capacity. This prevents confusion between effort and performance.
3️⃣ Reduce Stress for Top Performers: Engaged-exhausted employees, highly passionate but stressed, are at the highest risk of quitting.
4️⃣ Encourage 85%-right decisions: Instead of chasing perfection, accept 85%-right decisions. It relieves pressure on high performers and keeps the team moving forward.
5️⃣ Watch out for high-pressure language: avoid using terms like ASAP or URGENT, fostering open dialogue about deadlines and trade-offs.
6️⃣ End meetings 10 minutes early: Give your team a break from the "Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat" life.
7️⃣ Lead by example: Set your own intensity level to 85%. Don't send emails late at night if you discourage working late. Be the model your team looks up to.
