Es gibt das, was Stammzellen eines Tages leisten könnten. Und es gibt das, was sie heute bereits leisten. 🔬

Nabelschnurblut-Stammzellen werden heute bei Transplantationen für über 80 Erkrankungen eingesetzt: vor allem bei Erkrankungen des Blutes, des Immunsystems und des Stoffwechsels.

Das ist kein Versprechen für die Zukunft. Die erste Nabelschnurblut-Transplantation geht auf das Jahr 1988 zurück, und seither ist Nabelschnurblut zu einer der anerkannten Quellen für Transplantationen geworden, die in Zentren auf der ganzen Welt genutzt wird.

Für uns ist diese Unterscheidung wichtig. Etablierte Medizin ist das eine, Forschung das andere, und wir halten beides bewusst auseinander: Nur so lässt sich ehrlich über dieses Thema sprechen.

Pregnant through the summer heat? ☀️ A few small habits make August a lot more comfortable.

Three that really help:

1️⃣ Drink before you feel thirsty. Thirst kicks in late, especially now, so keep water within reach all day.

2️⃣ Move in the cooler hours. Early morning or after sunset, at your own pace. A short walk in the shade beats a long one in the sun.

3️⃣ Put your legs up, often. Heat and mild swelling travel together, and a few minutes with your feet raised, several times a day, makes a real difference.

One thing worth knowing: if the swelling comes on suddenly, or reaches your face and hands, call your midwife. That one isn't just the heat.

Preserving stem cells means opening two doors, not one. 🔬

Not all cells are used the same way. There are two main routes:

🔵 Autologous (self use) — the stem cells are preserved and, if needed, reinfused into the very same person they came from. Perfect compatibility, zero rejection risk: ideal for personalized regenerative approaches.

🔵 Allogeneic (donor use) — the cells are given to a compatible person: a sibling, a family member, or a registered anonymous donor. In this case, HLA compatibility is required.

And here's what makes SSCB unique: we are the only Swiss private biobank registered with the WMDA (World Marrow Donor Association). This means our clients' samples can be made available for transplants through the international network, always, and only, if the family chooses to.

Have you heard of "stem cell preservation," but you're not entirely sure what it actually means? 🧬

Here it is, explained simply.
At birth, the blood and tissue of the umbilical cord contain precious stem cells. Normally, they are simply discarded. But in just a few minutes they can be collected and stored in a laboratory at –196°C, with no invasive procedure for mother or baby.

Frozen at such low temperatures, these cells essentially stop "ageing": they remain viable for decades, ready to be used if needed in regenerative medicine therapies. And because they come from your baby, they are a perfect genetic match.

A choice you can make only once: at birth.

Only a few weeks to go and here comes the question everyone asks: "When should I head to the hospital?" 🤍

3 common mistakes that, if you know about them in advance, will help you arrive at labour feeling calmer:

1. Going to hospital too early. At the first contractions, the instinct is to rush , but if labour is just beginning, you'll often be sent back home. At this stage, you're usually more comfortable in your own surroundings: move around, take a warm shower, rest. Head in when contractions are regular, close together, and intense.

2. Holding your breath. When pain kicks in, the body tenses and the breath locks up — which only increases exhaustion. Breathing slowly and deeply, going with each contraction, helps both you and your baby.

3. Arriving without a plan. Your bag, your documents, your route, and your birth plan: sorting these out in advance takes the stress away at exactly the moment when all you want to think about is your baby.

You don't need to be perfect, a little information and the right people by your side are all it takes.
