The artworks that are part of “Botanical Memories” explore reparations, healing, oppression, and finding our way back to forgotten knowledge in many different ways. Created from various different standpoints, they offer insight into what it means to reflect on these ruptures and trace the persistence of marginalized communities, prompting questions around who defines plants and how knowledge is generated.

Come take a closer look at the Old Botanical Garden UZH at Pelikanstr. 40, 8001.
We are there everyday from 10 am to 7 pm.

Die Kunstwerke, die Teil der Ausstellung “Botanische Erinnerungen” sind, untersuchen Heilung, Reparaturen, Unterdrückung und den Weg zurück zu vergessenem Wissen auf verschiedene Weisen. Von unterschiedlichen Standpunkten aus geschaffen, eröffnen sie Einblick in was ees bedeutet, diese Brüche zu reflektieren und den Spuren der Ausdauer und Beharrlichkeit marginalisierter Gesellschaftsgruppen zu folgen. Es stellen sich Fragen das Schaffen von Wissen und wer Pflanzenwissen definiert.

In Kollaboration mit der Kunstinstitution WE ARE AIA I Awareness in Art präsentiert der Botanische Garten der Universität Zürich „Botanical Memories: Eine Performance Serie”.
Welches Wissen über Heilpflanzen - geprägt durch Menschen, Orte und Traditionen - sollte erinnert und weitergegeben werden?
Verschiedene Performances und Workshops mit anschliessenden Kunst-und-Wissenschaft-Dialogen laden zu einem öffentlichen Austausch über Heilmethoden und die Geschichte von Pflanzen ein. Gemeinsam mit Heilpraktizierenden und Ethnobotaniker*innen untersuchen Kunstschaffende, wie Kunst alternative Heilmethoden und das Verbundensein mit der Natur ins öffentliche Bewusstsein rücken kann.

Healing Ritual 🗓 Sunday, 27 April 2025 🕒 15:00 / approx. 60 minutes 📍 New Botanical Garden, University of Zurich Zollikerstrasse 107, 8008 Zurich

In Healing Ritual, Simon Grab’s sonic universe draws from the surrounding vegetation. Lika Nüssli responds with her body—guided by the echo of these sounds—and transfers her movement onto a transparent canvas with fluid brushstrokes. What emerges is a living, ever-evolving process of transformation and growth. Grab describes this journey through ecological time as Sonics of Posthuman Species—a gesture of respect towards nature and a call for deeper awareness.

In Healing Ritual schoepft Simon Grab seine Klaenge aus der umgebenden Vegetation. Lika Nuessli antwortet mit ihrem Koerper und uebertraegt die Bewegung mit fliessenden Pinselstrichen auf eine transparente Leinwand. Ein sich staendig wandelnder Prozess von Transformation und Wachstum entsteht. Grab nennt diese Reise durch oekologische Zeiten Sonics of Posthuman Species – eine Geste des Respekts gegenueber der Natur und ein Aufruf zu mehr Achtsamkeit.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Botanischen Garten der Universität Zürich lädt WE ARE AIA – Awareness in Art zu einer performativen Erkundung von Heilpflanzen ein. Performances und Workshops regen dazu an, über das Verhältnis von Mensch und Pflanze nachzudenken – zwischen überliefertem Wissen, urbaner Entfremdung und neuen Formen des Heilens mit mehr-als-menschlichen Wesen. Das Programm wurde gemeinsam mit Künstler*innen Botaniker*innen, Heilpraktizierenden und dem Team des Botanischen Gartens entwickelt. Auftakt ist amSonntag, 27. April 2025 um 15:00 Uhr, mit der Performance «Healing Ritual» im Botanischen Garten der Universität Zürich. Dort trifft Simon Grabs Klanguniversum auf Lika Nüssliskörperlich-malerische Resonanz.

In collaboration with the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich, WE ARE AIA – Awareness in Art invites you to a performative exploration of medicinal plants. Performances and workshops encourage reflection on the relationship between humans and plants – between ancestral knowledge, urban alienation, and new forms of healing with more-than-human beings. The program was developed together with artists, botanists, healing practitioners, and the team of the Botanical Garden.

It opens on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 3:00 PM with the performance Healing Ritual at the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich. There, Simon Grab’s sound universe—inspired by the essence of local vegetation—meets Lika Nüssli’s painterly response in movement.

Join us for the City Walk on April 5th
‘With my seeds, I wanted to make a small, blooming statement in the grey city. It burst out of a small crack and the entire public space changed.’
Maurice Maggi
Back in the 1980s, gardener and chef Maurice Maggi (1955-2024) recognised that the city had great potential for increasing biodiversity. He was the first ‘urban gardener’ and ‘plant activist’ to sow pioneer plants in the city that successfully adapted to their barren habitat.
During our city walk, we follow in the footsteps of Maurice Maggi and explore what is already in bloom.
Our walk lasts around 1.5 - 2 hours and is wheelchair accessible. We meet at the Löwenbräu tram stop. We then take a look at the slope on Dammweg and walk along the viaduct arches to the end, where there is a wheelchair-accessible lift. We then walk together to Josefwiese, where we end the walk together (see map below).

The city walk will be led by art mediator Alexandra Eichenauer and inclusion specialist and artist Michael Herrmann.
The city walk takes place in all weathers and is free of charge. As the ramp is quite long for wheelchair users who are travelling independently, we are happy to offer assistance.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer sign language interpretation as this would go beyond our financial means. However, we are working on developing accessibility for all at other WE ARE AIA events.
Michael Herrmann, our inclusion specialist and artist himself, is committed to this.

BKZ-Stamm mit Michael Herrmann

Der BKZ-Stamm bietet die Gelegenheit neue Leute kennen zu lernen, sich miteinander auszutauschen und mehr über verschiedene Behinderungsformen zu erfahren.
An diesem BKZ-Stamm ist Michael Herrmann zu Gast. Er ist Kunstschaffender und engagiert sich für die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderungen, aus Selbsterfahrung vorwiegend für Menschen mit psychischen Behinderungen. Mit seinen Steinskulpturen verbindet der 54-Jährige Kunsthandwerk und gesellschaftliches Engagement. Ein zentrales Anliegen seiner Arbeit ist die Förderung von Inklusion, Barrierefreiheit und Mitbestimmung in Kunst und Kultur. In der Freizeit liest Michael Herrmann gerne Romane, testet neue Kochrezepte aus oder betätigt sich sportlich. So findet der Künstler auch neue Ideen für Steinskulpturen.

On January 13, 2025, WE ARE AIA celebrated the New Year’s Drinks with more than 60 friends of AIA. The event took place at Maison SHIFT, and during the presentation, a kids’ workshop produced their own sweets with artist Maya Minder.
A heartfelt thank you for this unforgettable evening. Happy New Year to everyone. We are excited to share our new projects with you.

Another Highlight we are proud of at the Futurological Congress:

The Initiative for Practises and Visions of Radical Care

Elena Sorokina presented the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care, which started in 2020 in the Greater Paris region.

It constitutes a diverse group of practitioners of arts, crafts, philosophies, healing and therapy coming from vastly spread geographies. Neither a classical collective nor a rigid structure, the Initiative is researching and reinventing modes of sustainable institutionalism. Based on friendships as well as professional bonds, it functions as an ecosystem and fosters interdependence and solidarity beyond identity. The focus on care is enacted as a flow of activities that nurture individuals and sustain social, environmental and political bonds, focusing as much on processes and methods as on outcomes. Through fluid artistic and curatorial ventures, the Initiative embraces languages, energies, histories, landscapes, bodies, and materials that reflect a non-extractive and sensitive relationship to the human and non-human alike.
