Gan Island is located in the Laamu Atoll, Maldives, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 12 fishing vessels, called Dhonis in the local Maldivian language (Divehi), are registered in the Fair Trade USA certified pole and line skipjack fishery. This traditional method of fishing is considered one of the most sustainable ways to catch tuna.

Registered members of local cooperatives are the only people allowed to harvest clams from the tidal mud flats in the Ben Tre province of Vietnam. The delicious clams live just under the surface of the mud and are collected using a hand rake.

Fair trade fisher associations are formed by residents of local islands to decide how the fair trade premiums, collected as part of the program, should be spent in the community.
