Kollektiv Haus Gawaling with The Fifth Sister receives the inaugural un—realized Art Prize!
“Given the increasingly neo-oral society we’re living in, where truth and information often seem felt rather than verified, we take the liberty to turn back to our elders‘ ways of remembering. The Fifth Sister puts that tradition next to archival footage, recordings, imagined material, science, and generated imagery. In it, the sisters‘ way of knowing becomes a methodology.” – Haus Gawaling
At the heart of The Fifth Sister are four Tibetan sisters – the matriarchs of Haus Gawaling – who collectively conjure an imaginary fifth sister. She represents unlived paths and possibilities that, through migration and displacement, never became reality.
Installation, archive and speculative fiction intertwine throughout the work. Filmed interviews, archival material, family photographs, generative imagery, science, sound, clothing and personal objects form the fictional archive of a person who never existed. Absence becomes a method: the project gives form to lives not lived, stories not recorded and futures that never came into being. Documentation and speculation overlap, while memory and imagination become forms of collective narration.
The Fifth Sister is not conceived as a single, definitive work. The project unfolds in chapters and grows over time – much like memory itself.
Kollektiv Haus Gawaling comprises Lhaga Namlha Koondhor, Enantios Dromos (Limitrofe TV), Rosario Bohío (Limitrofe TV), Jovana Maksić, Caroline Ricca Lee and Jenna Sutela, Paelden Dhargye Tamnyen.
