The recent Kolkata doctor r**e-murder case has once again stirred up India, a decade after a horrifying case in Delhi, which had stirred up similar sentiments.
It seems that little has progressed in this regards; and the struggle to find a way to prevent such situations from recurring continues.
Severe punishment have not acted as deterrent, educational reforms continue to be mildly effective, if at all. What really needs to happen long term is the normalisation of men-women relationships on grounds of equality and openness.
In my book 'Devi of Delhi: Crimes against women' https://www.amazon.com/Devi-Delhi-Crimes-against-women-ebook/dp/B0CS3YPYHC?ref_=ast_author_dp the fictional character of Devi creates a parallel system to deal with this at a local level. This could be labeled as 'vigilante justice' by those who don't want a change, and thrown out of mainstream discussions. It is not: it is a system built by people who really care, together with people from all branches of the justice system to create a safety net for the vulnerable ones who don't have any.
