Every couple of years we have moments of clarity ✨

The last couple of years haven’t left space for that - they’ve been about getting through each day and helping you guys, my dancers, to do the same thing.

2022 has given me a little window of possibility to reflect, to breathe and to listen. And to read. Actual books. How good is reading?! 🙌

One of the books I recently devoured - and I bet I’m not alone here - is Stolen Focus, by Johann Hari.

It blew me away. It gave me a new perspective. And it gave me resolve to change the way I’m doing things - in order to preserve myself so that I can be in the best position to help others.

Using social media is a pretty important marketing tool for many businesses - mine included. It connects you with people, allows you to share information about who you are and what you do, and helps to create a community.

But it costs.

It attaches you to a hamster wheel of likes, comments and followers, and asks you to pour your heart and soul into filling a feed, lip syncing a reel and integrating with an ever-changing algorithm.

And - simply put - I no longer have the capacity for that. Mentally, emotionally or strategically.

And so, I’ll be heading off socials, at least for the time being, to fall directly into the work that gives me meaning, and has the biggest impact on the people I work with. I still here 👋 - I’m just not here 📍

It's a flurry of:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔️scheduling sessions
✔️worrying about whether I've sent a client the right worksheet
✔️booking swimming lessons for my son using google translate because my German still needs work (reminder: do German homework)
✔️checking whether a school has clarified a masterclass for tomorrow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All at once. NOT CHILL. Overwhelm.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As dancers, overwhelm can creep up on us all too easily. Especially now, while the uncertainty drags on - it can all just start to feel like too much.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In session with a client this morning, we talked about what overwhelm in your graduate year of training looks like - and, importantly, what we can do to manage it.

Clarification, transformation to tasks and list building are essential to help you feel like you've got all of the little pieces of the puzzle in order.

Got my professional pants on 👖

The picture we see isn’t always complete… right?! In fact, it’s mostly not complete. Because social media is not real life- and as dancers, it’s crucial we keep that in mind.

This is my standard work outfit. Shirt visible on Zoom, leggings not. My approach to my work is similar- bring what is relevant and helpful for my clients, leave the rest behind.

As 2022 has gotten underway there has been a lot of behind-the-camera work happening here at enpointe consulting. Moving into a space where I’m working directly with schools is both exciting and overwhelming. It allows for more of the work I love- helping young dancers thrive in the challenges that elite training throws up on the daily. But it also requires more of the work that is less fun- scheduling, planning and admin.

It’s like class vs. performance. You do class for a reason- performance. It’s not all fun, it’s not all easy, but ultimately it’s rewarding as hell.

If the pandemic has taught me nothing else, it’s that leggings ARE pants 😜

Is anyone else only just realising it's 2022?

🙋 yep, me.

In the spirit of moving on from the old and bringing on the new, I hope you've had a relaxing holiday period, (however that looks for you) and that you're ready to move into 2022 with renewed energy. I sure am 🙌

If you're new here, I'm Alice, former professional ballerina turned wellbeing consultant for dancers. What does that even mean? Great question.

It means that I work specifically with ballet schools and companies to improve the way their dancers feel about themselves, their work and their future.

In 2022, I'm super excited to be changing up the structure of my work a little. I'm thrilled to be partnering up with in Sydney, Australia, as their in-house wellbeing consultant and student counsellor. Teaming up with such a talented group of staff and students to build a strong and cohesive support system is a great honour, and I'm delighted to be leading this work 💛

With this shift in mind, I'm gradually moving towards a model of working directly with schools and companies to improve their student and dancer wellbeing, rather than focusing only on working with dancers 1:1.

So - what do these changes mean for you?

Well - if you're a dancer or parent of a dancer and you want to access 1:1 coaching, get in quickly! Not that the other ones I post aren't. But the difference is that most of the other smiles you see in this feed are for a reason - a camera at the ready, a story to tell, a post to write 👍

This one is a just-because smile. Because there was an epic sunset going on behind me. Because those little curls in the corner belong to my delicious 2-year-old who was doing lion impersonations. Because I was enjoying a glass of bubbly with friends in an outside and therefore mask-free environment.

To be a good dancer, you have to make room in your life for just-because smiles. You have to take moments out of your dance life to take stock of the everything-else-life around you.

This week, give yourself space for that - take a moment away from your phone, your Zoom class, your expectations. I promise it will feel pretty good 🙌

Hi! 👋 I've noticed a few new people in the enpointe community so I want to reintroduce myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I used to be you. As an aspiring ballet dancer I spent a lot of time doubting myself – whether I was good enough, whether my body was ‘perfect’ enough, whether my extensions were high enough etc. etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All of the trying to be enough is exhausting. And counter-productive 🤦‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I WISH someone had told me to spend more time and energy working on my self-acceptance and confidence, and using strategic planning to work out my next steps. Because it would have made things soooo much easier for me – and more enjoyable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Armed with 15 years of experience working in the professional ballet industry and with young dancers, I can tell you right now that the best investment you can make in your training is to expand it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Expand it so that you learn how to confidently stand at the front of class, how to cope when you’re panicking side stage, and how to make a plan for your future 🔝 This stuff IS your training – it’s just not what you learn in regular ballet schools.

Performance anxiety is not something we’ve thought about much since lockdowns stopped live performance last year!😅

Performance anxiety is not just butterflies 🦋🦋side stage but a more serious fight or flight reaction in our brain that triggers the release of the stress hormone cortisol. 🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Performance Anxiety can affect anyone, and it’s actually more likely to affect ballet dancers than dancers of other disciplines AND more likely to affect soloists and principals than members of the corps de ballet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just because its common, doesn’t mean there’s nothing that can be done ✅.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ballet training is intense for young bodies and minds. 🥲

You know this - you see it every day if you’re a teacher, or if you’re a dancer, you live it.

School directors and teachers are given the huge task of helping students improve their technique, gain performance experience, and become the best dancer they can be.🩰

A new challenge for dancers and dance teachers that we’re now dealing with is learning how to foster resilience in the face of uncertainty.

That’s why building resilience is one of three key focus points in my new Mindset Masterclass, because if the past eighteen months have taught us anything, it’s that nothing is certain (in life or in ballet!)

Do you find someone who can lift you up? Or do you try to suck it up, tell no one and end up spiralling into a place of complete isolation?

I’m sure we’ve all been there!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are so many things that can affect our mood and mindset, from a friendly barista to missing out on a huge opportunity that you wanted more than anything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUT, if the things that cause a negative mood or are external, so are the things that create positive ones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This week on the blog, I wrote about how everyone experiences bad days, and that actually our peers (aka the people a dancer spends the most time with) can hugely affect whether we had a positive or negative mindset when bad days arise.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the most powerful things you can do is build a positive mindset alongside your peers (which is exactly what I do in my Mindset Masterclass) so that, when one of you has a bad day, the others can help them up.

In the Mindset Masterclass, I’m working with groups in studios so that students can build these skills together and become each other’s support networks. The best way to become a strong, resilient and positive dancer is alongside your peers, don’t you think??
