🌍 Trade Deals Could Be Shaping the Future of Whisky & Fine Wine

Trade agreements might not sound particularly exciting, but for global luxury markets, they can have a significant impact.

During 2026, we’ve seen some major developments:

🥃 India has reduced its Scotch whisky tariff from 150% to 75%, with further reductions planned.

🇺🇸 UK whisky entering the US has returned to zero-tariff trade.

🇨🇳 China has halved its Scotch tariff from 10% to 5%.

🍷 And a proposed EU–India agreement could eventually make European fine wines significantly more accessible to Indian consumers.

But what could greater international access mean for collectors?

A larger potential buyer pool can strengthen the global relevance of Scotch whisky and fine wine, but trade deals alone don't determine the value of individual bottles, cases or casks.

So, could these changes influence where the next generation of demand comes from?

Our latest article explores the changing global trade landscape, what it could mean for whisky and fine wine, and the key developments collectors should be watching.

🥃 Chivas Brothers shows resilience despite challenging market conditions

Chivas Brothers, Scotland’s second-largest whisky producer, has reported a 2% decline in full-year sales, but there’s an encouraging sign: the business returned to growth during the second half of the year.

With a portfolio including Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s and The Glenlivet, the group has been able to adapt as the global spirits market faces tariffs, inflation and changing consumer preferences.

🌍 Growth was particularly strong across key markets:
🇦🇫 Africa & Middle East: +24%
🇮🇳 India: +6%
🇹🇷 Turkey: +29%

The performance highlights the continued global demand for Scotch whisky, particularly across emerging markets.

For whisky investors and collectors, strong international demand and the ability of established Scotch brands to adapt to changing conditions remain important trends to watch.

🍷 Bordeaux, Burgundy or Champagne? Where are collectors looking in 2026?

After several challenging years, the fine wine market is showing signs of greater stability, but each region offers something different.

🍇 Bordeaux: Mature vintages, established producers and plenty of choice.

🍷 Burgundy: Scarcity, prestigious producers and highly sought-after vineyards continue to drive demand.

🥂 Champagne: Prestige cuvées and vintage releases are attracting renewed interest as the market moves towards greater stability.

The key trend? Selectivity.

Today's collectors are looking beyond regional headlines and focusing on provenance, producer reputation, vintage quality, rarity and storage history.

For those building a collection, understanding what you're buying is more important than ever.

🥃 From £130 to £270,000: a remarkable whisky cask story

In 1971, Surrey grandfather Angus Kerr bought a Glenrothes whisky cask for around £130 as an investment.

More than five decades later, that same cask (filled in 1969 and now 57 years old) has been valued at around £270,000.

Even more remarkable? Kerr once thought the investment was completely lost after the company he bought it through went bust. The cask was eventually traced to a warehouse in Speyside, along with the paperwork proving ownership.

Today, the whisky remains above the crucial 40% ABV threshold, with approximately 287 bottles-worth of spirit remaining.

The story is a fascinating reminder of what can happen when age, rarity, provenance and patience come together in the whisky cask market.

A landmark fine wine auction is about more than the final hammer price. 🍷

Recent results from Christie’s show that serious collectors continue to compete for wines where provenance, rarity, condition and reputation come together.

The Exceptional Private Cellar of a Silicon Valley Pioneer in June achieved $3.23 million, with 100% of lots sold and the collection reaching 132% of its low estimate.

Standout results included:
🍷 Domaine Georges Roumier, Bonnes-Mares 1971 — $100,000
🍷 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche 1990 — $100,000
🍷 Domaine Dujac, Clos Saint-Denis 1985 — $93,750

This auction shows more about the wine market than you think. We provide some analysis on what this means for the wine collection market.
