The story of Purple Angel starts with the rediscovery of Carménère in Chile in 1994, when an analysis of what was believed to be Merlot turned out to be the long lost Carménère varietal, marking a new era for Chilean winemaking.
Despite high demand for Montes Wines to create its very own Ultra Premium Carménère, Aurelio Montes, our founder and winemaker, would not be rushed in his mission to find the perfect outcome for Chile's iconic grape. Having spent time patiently testing and experimenting with different blends and grapes from different vineyards, he finally added the finishing touch to his creation, the addition of 8% Petit Verdot, resulting in the Purple Angel that we know and love today.
Purple Angel has been recognised as Chile's best Carménère and critics all over the world have named it a "wine from another planet". It's made with a blend of Carménère grapes grown on our vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe in the Colchagua Valley, blended with a small part of Petit Verdot, a match made in winemaking heaven!
