The Business implication of the Cristiano Ronaldo- Manchester United saga.
Cristiano Ronaldo felt disrespected when, as a substitute, was made to warm up only to end up not being used for the match. We are in the dying minutes of the match; at the 89th minute and his disgruntled silhouette was noticed storming out of the pitch, a move branded by a majority of pundits and fans as quite "disrespectful", "childish" and "out of place" for someone who has set a level of professionalism based on unprecedented guided discipline that has led to him being distinguished everywhere he has set his sights and acted. No doubt he has successfully stayed at the top of the game for over a decade, a feat only one man has beside him achieved, his eternal rival, Lionel Andres Messi.
When Cristiano made his sensational return to the Theatre of Dreams last season from Juventus, scoring 24 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils of Manchester United, with notable clutch goals in the Champions League knock-out stages, no one would have, in their wildest imaginations imagined the turn this new season would take on their leading goal scorer when Eric Ten Hag was appointed to lead the on-field operations of the 20 times EPL Champions. The objective was imbibed in the mission; get United back to winning ways and regain its glory long lost since the days of legendary Sir Alex. With more than 2 billion pounds down the drains in transfers, through 6 managers, 2 Executive Directors, Manchester United had become a symbol of failure with no clear plan, executive scandals, poor scouting policies and worst of all, no game plan! The Glazer ownership was taking the club to an impressive stretch of monumental catastrophe! All these in just 8 years!
Ten Hag's appointment was highly anticipated, with a lot of speculation surrounding their superstar man whom by this time rumours of dressing room dissent had started cracking out following his on-field antics the season prior whenever he was to be substituted. It was to be in the backdrop of the game being centered around Cristiano Ronaldo that Ten Hag would start his pre-season; only to be taken aback by hid unwillingness to participate on grounds of "handling serious family issues". He would later on join the team in their last two games, that was after it was rumoured that his agent had contacted other clubs to get their star man a befitting place in a team that has secured champions league football. Days later, Crsitiano Ronaldo would make his intentions clear that he wants to leave United. Eric Ten Hag had already declared his intentions of keeping him.
With game time considerably reduced on grounds of lack of pre-season participation, one of the greatest the sports has ever seen was reduced to being a substitute, some times unused in highly anticipated matches. The 38 year old was clearly not in Ten Hag's game plan and it was quite evident nothing was going to change that. With just two goals across all competitions in less-evident teams, Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't take it anymore. The manager has declared in all splendour of a boss that he "will deal with it".
FOOTBALL IS BUSINESS!
The prime motive of any business is profitability and Manchester United is an organised and legal corporate entity. For over 8 years the club had fell below expected standards and despite concerns to turn things around, nothing had been working in the direction all efforts were being invested. That was one of the reasons why Cristiano Ronaldo was brought in, and that was the same reason why Eric Ten Hag was also brought in, though in different capacities. Eric Ten Hag as the manager of the team was faced with the uphill task of managing the brand of Manchester United as an entity and also manage within that brand another global brand which was Cristiano Ronaldo; that task had proved perilous to his predecessors and Ronaldo was not prepared to settle for anything less than scoring the goals and keep breaking and establishing record after record and cement his hegemony as football's greatest. Eric Ten Hag came with a plan to build and develop a team of collective talents, with a specific style of play that will facilitate the realization of the expected objectives of the club...if he does not, he knows he will get the SACK for FAILING!
The structure of today's on-field display builds play from the goal-keepers. When Pep Guardiola, in his usual ingenuity made Germany and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer develop the ability to use his feet more in ball control to build play, little did the football world ever anticipate the effect that would have in shaping the structure and roles of some positions, especially the attackers of the opposing team who would now need to "press hard" in order to slow or break the flow of defenders' advances, giving their midfielders space to intercept and re-organize play to their advantage. This simply means all attackers must be physically fit to make runs or fall back when need be; something Cristiano Ronaldo cannot possibly. Age is catching up with him reasons why he prefers scoring goals within the limits of the 18m box as statistically proven.
For Manchester United to be among Europe's elites, they must finish in the top four of the very competitive English top flight. They must beat their noisy neighbours, the Londoners of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, Liverpool and the combative mid-table teams, that makes it atleast five top flight teams to beat of whom none has spared to splash the cash to acquire the best global talents to reinforce withering positions. Eric Ten Hag must get United where it used to be for sponsorship deals, elevated tv rights, grow fanbase who are the principal consumers of the Club's by-products and a European position that will attract rare talents This is about the club and not about Ronaldo whom on the other hand carries an image that influences media orientations; so Ten Hag and his cohorts may want to be a bit careful of their treatment to their universal influencer whom on the other hand constitutes a sizeable proportion of non-football lovers
Business is business!!!
