: a Devonian-aged Zlichovaspis (Odontochile) spinifera from Morocco.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.

The Geological Society invites you to register for its Energy Geoscience Conference: Powering the Energy Transition through Subsurface Collaboration. The conference, which will be held from 16 to 18 May 2023 in Aberdeen, will explore and develop the contribution of geology and geophysics to the low-carbon energy transition. The meeting will be a key forum for sharing geoscientific aspects of energy supply as earth scientists grapple with the subsurface challenges of remaking the world’s energy system, balancing competing demands in achieving a low-carbon future

Geoscience underpins many aspects of the energy mix that fuels our planet and offers a range of solutions for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions as the world progresses towards net zero. The aim of this new Energy Geoscience Conference series is to explore and develop the contribution of geolo...

Teacher professional learning opportunities

The Teacher Earth Science Education Programme (TESEP) will host teacher professional learning opportunities at Geoscience Australia in Canberra during December. These in-person programs will spend a day each on the topics of plate tectonics and critical minerals. The TESEP facilitators are experienced scientists and teachers who will help equip you with the skills to bring Earth science to life in the classroom.

Date: 12-13 December 2022
Time: 9.15 am to 4.15 pm daily
Location: Geoscience Australia, Symonston, Canberra
Cost: $35.00 per person/per day including refreshments
Full details available here.

28/10/2022

Fully funded MS and PhD positions are available for Spring/Summer/Fall 2023 in the Rock Deformation and Fault Mechanics laboratory in the Department of Geosciences at Utah State University. Successful candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work broadly on:

(a) Experimental studies of rock deformation and earthquake ruptures, and/or

(b) Numerical modeling of earthquake processes.

Students with bachelor's and/or master's in the geosciences (especially geophysics, seismology, tectonics, structural geology) with a strong quantitative background are encouraged to apply. Some prior experience with experimental rock mechanics, numerical modeling or machine learning techniques are desirable but not necessary. USU and the Department of Geosciences are committed to inclusivity, diversity, and antiracism. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the broad field of geosciences are especially encouraged to apply.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Srisharan Shreedharan ([email protected]), with your CV and a short statement of research interests before applying. GRE scores are no longer required for admission to the graduate program. However, English language test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) may be required for international students.

The application deadline is 6 January 2023. More information about the application process can be found here:

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship within the NERC-ENVISION Doctoral Training Partnership, co-funded by JBA Trust, with a project entitled: "Modelling extreme sea states in a changing climate". Coastal systems are extremely important for the natural environment worldwide. Waves are among the most important physical drivers for their evolution. Climate change involves transformation in wave climate that need to be understood and quantified using a combination of deterministic and stochastic approaches.

This PhD project will develop methods to describe future wave climates, with a focus on extreme values. The project will start by analysing existing projections for future sea states in order to understand and model the significance and spatial variability of future trends. Thereafter, the focus will be on developing an innovative technique to model coastal extremes, e.g. the extreme combinations of sea states and sea level, using both extreme value analysis and wave propagation models.

The studentship will be based at the University of Nottingham (U.K.), and they will work in close collaboration with the National Oceanographic Centre (U.K.) and JBA (U.K.), which they will visit for extended periods during the PhD course.

The student should possess a strong background and interest in physical processes of natural systems, numerical modelling, and statistics. Familiarity with coastal dynamics models (e.g. wave propagation models, SWAN), statistics packages (e.g. R), and data analysis software (e.g. MATLAB) and programming languages (e.g. Python) are welcome. They will join the Coastal Dynamics and Engineering research group at the University of Nottingham, which is specialized in the theoretical and numerical study of coastal processes.

Students should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or international equivalent) in civil engineering, physics, mathematics or closely related disciplines.

Envision projects will commence in October 2023. The deadline for applications is 11th January 2023. For more details on the application process, please visit
