🌱 What makes commodity traceability difficult on the ground?

Behind every traceable product is a farmer, a farm location, reliable records and a supply chain that connects them all.

But getting these pieces right isn't always easy. Is the biggest challenge registering farmers, accessing digital tools, keeping accurate records, or meeting the cost of compliance?

Farmers, cooperatives, buyers and agricultural professionals, we want to hear from you.

What is the biggest challenge you see, and what practical support would make a difference?

🌱 Why is everyone talking about traceability? And why should farmers care?

Imagine selling your cocoa to a buyer who wants to know exactly which farm it came from. Can you prove it?

That is what traceability is about: being able to follow a product back to where it was produced and show reliable information about its origin.

And this matters now because of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which introduces requirements for covered products entering or leaving the EU market.

30 December 2026 is a key implementation date for many businesses covered by the regulation, although some smaller operators have until 30 June 2027.

For farmers and cooperatives, getting prepared means starting with the basics:

✍🏾 Identify your farm and keep its details on record.
✍🏾 Map your farm location where required.
✍🏾 Keep reliable records of your production.
✍🏾 Work with cooperatives, buyers and exporters to make your produce traceable.

Farm IDs and farm passports can help organise these records. The goal is to make it easier to establish where produce comes from and support the information buyers need.

Traceability is not just paperwork. It is about helping African farmers and businesses prepare for changing market requirements.

At TRACE FORUM 2027, we will bring stakeholders together to discuss practical ways to build more transparent and traceable commodity supply chains.

🌍 Introducing TRACE FORUM 2027!

Africa’s commodity trade is entering a new chapter. From cocoa and coffee to timber and other agricultural products, buyers increasingly want to know where commodities come from and how they reach the market.

This makes traceability and transparency more important than ever. Farmers, cooperatives, exporters, businesses, and policymakers all have a role to play in building supply chains that can meet changing market expectations.

TRACE FORUM 2027 will create a platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and practical solutions to strengthen Africa’s position in global commodity trade.

Date: May 6–8, 2027
Venue: Yaoundé, Cameroon

ENG:
In 93 days, a cocoa bean without GPS coordinates becomes a very expensive bean to sell in Europe. This is important to note because Europe buys 84.6% of the cocoa produced in Cameroon.

On 30 December 2026, the EU Deforestation Regulation applies to large and medium operators. No plot coordinates, no due diligence statement. No statement, no market.
Most of Cameroon's EUDR conversation has been panels.

Ours has been contracts:
→ The South West Association of Cooperative Union; a body with over 60 cooperatives with over 22,650 hectares of farmland which carries about 90% of the region's cocoa and coffee farmers, signed with Didi Agric
→ Every farmer receives their own farm data. Not the exporter. Not the middleman. The farmer.

People keep asking me whether smallholders will be "left behind" by EUDR. Wrong question. The farmer was never behind. The data was.
EUDR is not a threat to Cameroonian farmers. Being invisible is.

Exporters buying from the South West this season: my DMs are open. Bring coffee. Ours is traceable.

FR:

The launch of the 2026/2027 cocoa season was successful and the Minister of Trade, H.E Luc Magloire pointed out three things which will be the challenges the industry may face this year;
- Quality
- EUDR Implementation
- Remuneration of Stakeholders

These things are well within the scope of our work and we will work together with the state to get things done.
