Over the past several months, Omicron-fueled outbreaks of COVID-19 and corresponding response measures have caused disruptions to China’s supply chains, factory production and the daily lives of its residents.

Companies operating in China have had to deal with many challenges, not the least of which is providing for the well-being of their employees amidst lockdowns and quarantines. PRI’s team has been no exception.

The outbreak has been most severe in Shanghai. One of PRI’s team members based in Shanghai shared his experience and recommended preparations for others in China.

Companies in China need to be prepared for Omicron-fueled outbreaks of COVID-19 and corresponding response measures including lockdowns.

While low-cost manufacturing and the world’s biggest potential market have mostly driven China investment in the past for international firms, setting up an integrated engineering and sourcing team in the country is a key potential competitive advantage for US and European companies.

The latest edition of PRI Insights makes the case that competitive advantages include a quick start up at lower costs, an increase in speed in the engineering and design process, and a natural base for local sales.

Traditionally, companies treated their China strategy as a China-focused effort. In the latest edition of PRI Insights, Senior Consultant Michael Barbalas makes the case that given changes in China’s trade and investment patterns, it is better to now consider a China strategy more globally as a China-centered component.

From China, it is possible to support a wide variety of countries that are not well served from a North American distribution base. China is now the top trade partner for 128 of 190 countries and its people have deep experience in Central Asia, South Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Africa.

Recent events – tariffs, the COVID-19 pandemic and a resulting global logistics backlog – have caused many companies to reevaluate their supply chains. Companies with factories in China are looking to add manufacturing capacity in another low-cost country to reduce risks and make their global supply chains more resilient. PRI, with its longtime presence in Asia, has identified the Philippines as a top candidate for its own operations and for that of its clients.
