The relations between China and Senegal are poised to reach new heights thanks to President Xi Jinping's state visit to the West African nation, the first by a Chinese head of state in nine years.

Xi and Senegalese President Macky Sall held talks and attended a ceremony for the signing of multiple cooperation documents, including one on jointly building the Belt and Road.

Senegal is the first West African country to sign a Belt and Road cooperation document with China.

Xi said China is willing to join hands with Senegal to lift bilateral ties and cooperation to a higher level, so as to bring more benefits to both peoples.

This year is key for China-Africa ties. In September, a summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will be held in Beijing.

In his talks with Xi, Sall vowed Senegal's full support in strengthening the FOCAC, deepening cooperation between China and Africa, and establishing the China-Africa community with a shared future.

China and the European Union (EU) on Monday agreed to jointly work to safeguard the rules-based international order, promote multilateralism and support free trade.

The agreement was reached during the 20th China-EU leaders' meeting, co-chaired by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

The two sides are firmly committed to fostering an open world economy, promoting trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and resisting protectionism and unilateralism.

Both sides strongly support the rule-based multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) as its core and were committed to complying with existing WTO rules.

The two sides agreed to set up a joint working group to discuss the WTO reform.

The two sides stressed their commitment to expanding two-way opening up and improving market access and investment environment, promoting synergies between China's Belt and Road Initiative and EU's initiatives, and accelerating the negotiations of the agreement on the cooperation and protection of geographical indications.

Also on Monday, Li and Juncker attended the opening ceremony of the China-EU entrepreneurs' roundtable.

Britain's financial and professional services communities will play a critical role in ensuring the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative meets its objectives, according to representatives from the United Kingdom government.

Douglas Flint, who the UK finance ministry appointed Financial and Professional Services Envoy to the Belt and Road Initiative in December, outlined his vision for UK involvement in the initiative at an event hosted by Standard Chartered Bank and media organization Thomson Reuters.

Flint said the scale of the development initiative is so vast that it cannot be achieved by any one nation.

“The evolution of what BRI means has been rapid and dramatic,” Flint said. “What started somewhat narrowly as trade route definition and reinforcement has migrated to globalization 2.0, focused on building the infrastructure that allows economies to grow and connect to the rest of the world under an overriding vision of shared prosperity - a vision committed to enhancing cross-border trade and investment flows.”

The UK finance ministry has formed the BRI Expert Board, chaired by Flint, and it will generate Belt and Road policy recommendations and help crowd-in private sector capital and expertise at scale.

This event, organized by the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, brought together about thirty experts on the issue of Sino-Ukrainian exchanges.
