China Will Take Effective Measures to Deter Any Sabotaging Moves in South China Sea: Defense Spokesperson

BEIJING, Oct. 16 -- "The Chinese side will take resolute and effective measures to deter any sabotaging moves in the South China Sea, and uphold regional peace and stability," said Senior Colonel Chen Xi, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense (MND), at a press conference on October 16, 2026.

According to media reports, the Philippine side recently made provocations near Huangyan Dao and Ren'ai Jiao multiple times and said that it would not allow the Chinese side to dictate terms on Philippine "territory". The Philippine military claimed that they observed over a hundred Chinese warships and China Coast Guard vessels maintaining regular presence in waters near Zhongye Dao and Xianbin Jiao, and that the Chinese side intended to shake the Philippines' resolve in safeguarding its rights and interests.

"China has indisputable sovereignty over Huangyan Dao and Nansha Qundao, including Zhongye Dao, Xianbin Jiao and Ren'ai Jiao, and their adjacent waters, and has sovereign rights and jurisdiction over relevant waters," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson pointed out: "These islands and reefs lie outside the scope of Philippine territories. Therefore the Philippine side is not qualified to claim 'safeguarding its own rights and interests'."

"The Chinese side takes necessary measures in accordance with laws and regulations to uphold its sovereign rights. They are legitimate, reasonable, professional and standardized," the spokesperson added.

"For some time, the Philippine side has been rallying external forces to stir up troubles in the South China Sea at the expense of the common interests of regional countries. It continues to make provocations violating others' sovereignty and distort facts to spread false narratives, which makes itself a destroyer of peace and a destabilizing factor in the South China Sea," the spokesperson noted.

China Urges Japan's Incumbent Leadership to Face History, Break with Militarist Past After Latest Yasukuni Records Revealed

China on Thursday urged Japan's incumbent leadership to face up to history, reflect on their country's wartime crimes and make a clean break with militarism after Japanese media reports disclosed, for the first time, internal meeting records from Yasukuni Shrine that systematically document the decision-making process behind the enshrinement of 14 Class-A war criminals, including Hideki Tojo.

According to the records, the Japanese government reached an arrangement with the shrine on their enshrinement as early as the 1960s but kept it from the public. The relevant facts did not come to light until 1979.

In response to a question regarding the matter, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press briefing that the relevant records serve as fresh proof that Japan was fully aware that enshrining Class A war criminals was disgraceful and felt guilty about it.

It acted with deliberate scheming and colluded tacitly throughout the decision-making process. These Class A war criminals were the chief culprits of Japan's militarist wars of aggression, with their hands stained with the blood of people in victimized countries, Mao said.

"The solemn rulings of the Tokyo Trials nailed these war criminals to the pillar of shame in human history, upheld international justice, and laid the legal foundation for the post war international order. How can Japan's incumbent leaders, who repeatedly pay homage to this de facto 'war criminal shrine,' have any sense of conscience?" said Mao.

The spokesperson made the remarks when commenting on the war crimes of the notorious Unit 731 of the Imperial Japanese Army.

According to reports, the Singaporean documentary Inside Unit 731: Japan's Secret Human Experiments received Singapore's national award for the Best History Documentary, with 1.45 million views on YouTube. Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) aired the documentary A Secret Unit: The Silent Postwar Era, which exposes Unit 731's crimes against humanity through newly discovered photographs, firsthand testimony and other evidence.

The spokesperson pointed out that during World War II, the Unit 731 conducted appalling humane experiments and waged biological warfare in China. These heinous crimes gravely violated international law. The extent of their crimes against humanity is beyond description, marking one of the darkest chapters in the history of human civilization.

He further noted that right-wing forces in Japan have recently used emerging technologies to "poison" data in an attempt to whitewash Japan's culpability for its aggression and distort public perceptions, once again triggering high vigilance within the international community.

"As some insightful people in Japan have pointed out, historical truth cannot be erased, and the crimes committed by the Japanese forces during their invasion of China are backed by irrefutable evidence and cannot be denied," stressed the spokesperson.

Chinese FM Rejects Philippine Claims About Disruptions of Medical Evacuation near Ren'ai Jiao

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday rejected Philippine claims about disruptions of a medical evacuation from a Philippine vessel illegally grounded at China's Ren'ai Jiao, stressing China will firmly respond to any malicious provocation and resolutely safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks on Friday, reiterating that a Philippine coast guard vessel had entered waters near Ren'ai Jiao in China's Nansha Qundao without China's permission on Thursday morning.

The measures taken by the China Coast Guard (CCG) in accordance with laws and regulations were justified and reasonable, Mao said.

Following communication between the two sides, China promptly allowed the injured person to be transferred by a small boat on humanitarian grounds and provided necessary assistance, Mao added.

Instead of showing appreciation, some individuals in the Philippines disregarded the facts, took information out of context and shifted blame onto China, Mao said. This again exposed their real intention of stirring up trouble and seeking attention, she said, calling such conduct disgraceful.

Mao's remarks followed a statement issued on Thursday evening by CCG spokesperson Jiang Lue, who said Philippine coast guard vessel 4409 had traveled to waters near Ren'ai Jiao that day to evacuate an injured person from the Philippine warship illegally grounded there. Jiang also confirmed that out of humanitarian considerations, the Chinese side immediately allowed the Philippine side to transfer the injured person by small boat, and the CCG handled the matter in accordance with the law and regulations, and provided necessary assistance.

Jiang said the Philippine side's remarks disregarded the facts, distorted the truth and sought to mislead the public. China has indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Qundao, including Ren'ai Jiao, and their adjacent waters, he said, warning the Philippine side to immediately stop its infringements, provocations and dissemination of false claims.
