Choosing the right gate type is not just a design detail —
it directly impacts part quality, appearance, cycle time, and tooling cost.

Common Injection Mold Failures & Solutions

🔧 Practical Troubleshooting Tips from a Tooling Engineer

Do you know how to troubleshoot injection mold failures?
Below are several common injection mold problems and proven solutions based on real manufacturing experience:

1️⃣ Guide Pin / Guide Bushing Galling or Bending

Root Causes:
• Uneven wall thickness
• Asymmetric parting line design
• Insufficient hardness causing side load
• Misalignment and lack of concentricity during installation

Solutions:
• Add cylindrical locating features
• Perform boring in one setup to ensure concentricity and perpendicularity
• Improve heat treatment hardness of guide pins and bushings

Preventive Measures:
• Never allow guide pins to bear lateral forces
• Regular cleaning and lubrication

2️⃣ Ejector Pin Bending, Breakage, or Flash Leakage

Solutions:
• Use high-strength ejector pin materials and optimized heat treatment
• Front fitting length: 10–15 mm
• Reduce middle section diameter by approximately 0.2 mm

Preventive Measures:
• Manually test ejector movement smoothness before each startup
• Regular cleaning and lubrication

3️⃣ Gate Sticking or Difficult Degating

Root Causes:
• Poor surface finish of the sprue bushing
• Deformed taper hole
• Mismatch between nozzle radius and sprue bushing

Solutions:
• Precision grinding to achieve surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.4
• Design a dedicated sprue puller or ejector system

Preventive Measures:
• Regular inspection of sprue bushing wear
• Avoid forceful knocking during part removal

4️⃣ Slider or Lifter Sticking / Poor Return

Root Causes:
• Insufficient guide length
• Poor lubrication
• Plastic residue or debris contamination

Permanent Solutions:
• After full withdrawal, ensure the slider remains inside the guide slot with a length ≥ 2/3 of the total guide length
• Optimize fit between slider and guide groove

Preventive Measures:
• Add automatic lubrication points
• Install dust protection and debris-cleaning stations

5️⃣ Poor Cooling Performance

Root Causes:
• Aging seals in cooling channels
• Inadequate parallel cooling circuit design
• Scale buildup inside water channels

Solutions:
• Regular chemical descaling and cleaning
• Arrange sufficient parallel cooling channels around cores and cavities
• Avoid hot spots and uneven cooling

Preventive Measures:
• Record inlet and outlet water temperature and pressure each shift
• Inspect hose connections and seals before shutdown

Injection mold manufacturing cannot focus solely on price. The following factors directly impact product quality:

1.Product Design:
Ensure the design meets injection molding requirements, such as uniform wall thickness, appropriate draft angles, and rib design. Avoid design flaws that lead to mold manufacturing difficulties or molding quality issues.

2.Product Precision:
Define required dimensional accuracy, geometric tolerances, etc., to determine the mold's manufacturing precision and tolerance range. High-precision products require higher-precision molds, which increases costs accordingly.

3.Production Volume:
The expected output is a key basis for selecting the appropriate mold type and material.

4.Mold Material:
Common mold steels include P20, 718H, H13, etc. Different materials vary in hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and price.

5.Mold Structure:
Consider factors such as the number of cavities, parting line location, gate position, and ejection method. Ensure the mold can open and close smoothly, allow complete part ejection, and facilitate maintenance during production. The mold structure is also a major factor in determining its cost.

6.Mold Lifespan:
Define the expected production lifespan of the mold, which is related to the mold material, manufacturing process, and operating conditions.

7.Mold Precision:
The machining accuracy of the mold directly affects the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the product.

8.After-sales Service:
Various issues may arise during mold use, making the supplier's after-sales support very important.

9.Other Factors:
Including delivery time, transportation, installation, etc.
