☕ What does “eco-friendly” coffee packaging actually mean?
Choosing paper or plant-based packaging is only part of the story.
For coffee shops and coffee brands, you should also ask:
♻️ Can the packaging actually be recycled or composted?
📜 Does it have a recognized certification?
🏭 Does your local waste system accept it?
☕ Does the coffee bag provide the right barrier protection?
📦 Can you reduce unnecessary packaging materials?
For example, a PLA-lined cup may be compostable, but it needs access to the right industrial composting system.
Coffee bags have their own challenges too. Degassing valves and barrier layers help protect freshly roasted coffee, but they can also affect recyclability.
💡 The most sustainable option isn't always the material that looks the “greenest.”
It's the option that matches your product, supply chain, customers, and actual end-of-life infrastructure.
