Jeans Initial Production Check (IPC): Preventing Defects and Production Deviations

Why an Initial Production Check (IPC) is critical for jeans

For garments such as jeans, dresses, blazers, or coats, Sunchine Inspection strongly recommends performing an Initial Production Check (IPC) to prevent defects and production deviations from being replicated across the entire production.

An IPC is performed at the beginning of production when the first units roll off the mass production lines.
This early-stage inspection helps verify the following:

🔹 Production understanding & setup
• Client requirements, specifications, and approved patterns have been correctly understood and translated into production instructions
• No misinterpretation exists that could lead to repeated defects or non-conformities across all units

🔹 Production conditions & equipment
• Raw materials, as well as the actual working condition and suitability of machines and equipment (e.g. topstitch, chainstitch machines), are consistent with the denim weight and garment construction
• Early signs of defects linked to processing or machine issues (e.g. color variation, uneven stitching) are identified

Concrete examples
👉 Example1
During an IPC, inspectors may observe recurring skipped stitches or uneven topstitching on seams such as the outseam or waistband.
Line checks often reveal worn needles, incorrect needle size for the denim weight, or unstable thread tension.
If not corrected early, the same defect is likely to be reproduced across the entire production run, increasing the risk of seam failure, claims, and rework.

👉 Example2
Fabric defects such as color discoloration, shading variations, or uneven appearance may result from issues in dyeing, washing, or processing equipment.
If not identified at an early stage, these defects will be reproduced across the entire production, leading to non-conformities and potential rejection at destination.

🔹 Sample drawing for laboratory testing during Initial Production Check
Samples can be drawn during IPC for laboratory testing, to verify that raw materials and accessories are free from restricted or hazardous substances (e.g. heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde), which may lead to compliance issues or product recalls
Or to confirm:
•Fabric quality and composition
• Dyeing and color fastness (washing, rubbing, perspiration, etc.)

📌At Sunchine Inspection, samples drawing at random for lab testing during inspection are free of charges, sealed and sent directly to a relevant ISO 17065 laboratory.

Jeans Quality Inspection: Controlling Risks Before Shipment

When inspecting jeans and other types of pants, it is crucial to perform a complete visual and functional examination of the garment, both outside and inside.
This includes scrutinizing the front, sides, and back, holding the pants at the waistband to assess balance and symmetry, laying the garment flat on a table to verify alignment and construction, and checking the fit on a mannequin or live model, when available and accepted.
Jeans may appear simple, but they combine heavy denim fabrics, high stress seams, washing effects, and metal components, making them particularly exposed to workmanship and construction defects if not properly verified during production.

What Sunchine Inspection’s garment inspectors verify during a jeans inspection
1️⃣ Fabric & appearance
We check:
• Denim appearance consistency (shade variation, washing and abrasion effects, whiskers)
• Visible fabric defects (stains, oil marks, holes, slubs, distortion, etc.)
• Overall visual conformity against the approved sample or reference

2️⃣ Workmanship & construction quality
We check:
• Stitching regularity, density, and continuity
• Seam quality at high stress areas: waistband, outseam, inseam, crotch
• Presence of skipped stitches, broken stitches, and loose threads
• Mandatory symmetry and alignment checks:
o Left/right legs
o Pocket placement
o Waistband alignment
• Buttons & Buttonholes alignment, bar tack positioning, and reinforcement at stress points
📌 Workmanship defects are among the most frequent causes of returns and claims for jeans.

3️⃣ Components & attachments
We check:
• Zippers, buttons, rivets, embroidery, and logos: attachment, alignment, positioning, and presence
• Absence of sharp edges or obvious safety risks
• Consistency of components with approved references
If pull checks are performed: manually by hand, without measuring equipment, we report them as “manual pull check – for reference only. Indeed, standardized pull or tension tests require dedicated apparatus.

4️⃣ Size, measurements & fit
We check:
• Garment measurements against approved size specifications
• Tolerances as defined by client
• Overall fit appearance through:
o Flat measurement checks
o Fitting check on dummy or live model
📌 If dummy or live model are not available or not accepted, this limitation is recorded in the inspection report.

5️⃣ Labeling & marking
We check:
• Presence and accuracy of care labels, size labels, and country of origin
• Label and barcode readability, positioning, and attachment
• Consistency with client instructions and applicable destination market requirements

6️⃣ Packaging & transport protection
We check:
• Folding method and overall presentation
• Polybags, hangers (if applicable), and carton quality
• Carton marking, quantities, and adequacy of protection suitable for transport

Exportar a Ecuador 🇪🇨 — Calzado de seguridad y exportación a Ecuador
RTE INEN 264 (unificado) – Requisitos regulatorios (INEN 2)

Cookware, kitchenware & tableware — why laboratory testing is essential🔬
Third party product inspection can identify many issues.
👉 But it cannot detect the presence or absence of harmful chemical substances that may pose health risks to consumers.
Factory test reports can be useful —
but they don’t automatically prove the chemical safety of the production batch being shipped.
A test report is only meaningful if:
• it comes from an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory with the relevant test methods in scope
• it clearly matches the actual product and production batch
👉 To ensure that the products being shipped are safe, laboratory testing remains essential.

✅ Why cookware must be tested in a laboratory
Chemical risks are not visible.
They depend on:
• material composition
• heat
• duration of use
• type of food in contact (aqueous, fatty, acidic)
• coatings and decorative layers
👉 These conditions cannot be verified during on site inspection.

✅ Examples (real use conditions)
1. Cookware (heat exposure)
Certain imported cookware has been found to leach lead into food under conditions simulating real use.
👉 FDA warning on imported cookware
2. Utensils (repeated use)
Materials can degrade over time and may release substances when in contact with hot or fatty foods
3. Ceramic mugs, cups & tableware
Lead may be present in glazes or decorations and can leach into food or beverages, especially with heat or acidic contents
👉 FDA Qhttps://h1.nu/1q7u-&A on lead glazed pottery

✅ What laboratory testing verifies
• Migration testing under simulated conditions of use
• Chemical analysis (composition, contaminants, restricted substances)

✅ Practical points
• Claims vs reality:
“PFOA free” does not necessarily mean PFAS free
• Laboratory competence:
ISO/IEC 17025 “in general” is not enough —
👉 the accreditation scope must cover the required test methods
• Sampling & traceability:
Random sampling during inspection and direct shipment to the laboratory helps ensure the results represent the actual production batch

✅ Applicable frameworks (examples—depending on destination)
• EU: EC 1935/2004 + EU 10/2011 + 84/500/EEC
👉 EU food contact materials legislation
• UK: UK versions of EC 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011
👉 UK food contact materials guidance
• China: GB 4806.1
• India: FSSAI Packaging Regulations (2018)
• Vietnam: MOH QCVN 12 series
• USA: FDA 21 CFR Part 174

👉Sunchine Inspection can support buyers by:
• defining the appropriate testing scope based on materials and destination market
• coordinating testing with ISO/IEC 17025 laboratories within the relevant scope
• drawing samples at random during inspection, sealing them, and sending them directly to the laboratory
👉 ensuring that laboratory results are traceable to the actual production batch being shipped

Cookware Inspection: Managing Safety, Performance, and Compliance Risks
Assessing the conformity, performance, and safe use of cookware products is essential to reduce the risk of non conformities that may lead to customer complaints, shipment delays, or product recalls.
Cookware is subject to international standards, market specific regulations, and buyer specifications. A structured, risk based third party inspection helps verify that products are manufactured according to approved specifications and are suitable for their intended use.
Sunchine Inspection supports brands, importers, and retailers by providing tailored cookware inspection solutions, with each inspection performed by experienced and qualified inspectors, in line with the product’s specific features, the client’s special requirements, and the applicable regulatory requirements of the destination market.
Our inspections cover cookware manufactured in China, Vietnam, India, and other sourcing countries across Asia and beyond.

What our cookware inspections include
Our inspectors conduct meticulous on site inspections, including:
- Visual condition and workmanship checks
- Packaging, labels, and marking verification
- Size and weight measurements
- Functional and performance verification through witnessed on site tests, performed within the defined inspection scope and subject to the availability of factory equipment

Depending on product type and agreed inspection scope, typical on site checks and tests for cookware include:
- Internal coating thickness measurements
- Non stick coating performance checks
- Handle and lid strength tests
- Abrasion resistance of coatings
- Dry boil and water boil tests
- Thermal shock resistance checks
- Functional usability tests
- Induction compatibility verification (where applicable)
- Leakage and capacity checks
- Stability and wobble assessments
- Cross hatch (tape) adhesion tests
- Rub resistance tests
- Corrosion / salt spray exposure checks
Note: Extended salt spray tests require two days of inspections to be completed

Third party inspection has its limits. The presence or absence of harmful chemical substances cannot be detected through third party on site inspection. Detection and quantification of chemical substances require laboratory testing performed by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, whose accreditation scope must explicitly cover the relevant test methods.
To make sure that our actual production of cookware is free of harmful substances which may harmful user's health, we strongly recommend to consider to complete cookware third party inspection by requiring lab testing..
During cookware inspections, Sunchine Inspection inspectors can draw sample at random for lab test and send them directly to the laboratory.

• Marking must be clearly legible and durable
• Marking/labels and required information shall be in Spanish (other languages may be added).
• Demonstration of conformity through the applicable INEN certification scheme

📄 Certification approach
For electric cooking appliances, conformity is typically demonstrated through INEN 1 certification, where compliance is verified mainly by laboratory safety testing and shipment or lot evaluation.
This does not mean these products are low risk. It means that risk is primarily controlled through standardized safety testing, rather than through continuous factory process audits.

⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid
• Assuming household appliances are inherently low risk
• Ignoring the exact scope and exclusions of RTE INEN 208
• Using test reports not aligned with the IEC 60335 basis required for the product category (Part 1 + applicable Part 2)
• Providing marking/required information/instructions only in English (RTE INEN 208 states indications must be in Spanish, other languages may be added)
• Applying for certification too late, after shipment planning

⚠️ Errores comunes a evitar

Export to Ecuador 🇪🇨 — INEN 1 vs INEN 2 certification schemes: what’s the difference?
When exporting regulated products to Ecuador, compliance with the applicable RTE INEN is mandatory before customs clearance.

A critical step is applying the correct INEN certification scheme, as defined in the regulation.

🔹 INEN 1 — Product / shipment based certification
✔ Conformity demonstrated mainly through laboratory safety testing
✔ Certification applies to a specific shipment or production lot
✔ No full factory audit

⚠️ Common misconception
INEN1 ≠ “low risk”
Certification schemes are not risk categories.
They reflect how conformity is demonstrated, as defined by the applicable RTE INEN
📦 Example:
Electric cooking appliances regulated under RTE INEN 208
→ These products present real safety risks (overheating, fire, electric shock), which are addressed through strict IEC 60335 testing requirements.
→ Conformity is therefore demonstrated primarily through product testing.

🔹 INEN 2 — Factory based certification
✔ Conformity based on factory audit + product testing
✔ Covers ongoing and continuous production
✔ Includes surveillance audits to ensure consistency
🏭 Example:
Safety and protective footwear regulated under RTE INEN 264,
→ conformity depends on consistent manufacturing performance which is critical to user protection.

⚠️ Mistakes to avoid
• Assuming INEN 1 means the product is “low risk”
• Choosing a certification scheme without checking the RTE
• Ignoring factory audit requirements when INEN 2 applies
• Using outdated or incorrect RTE references
• Applying for certification too late in the shipment process

✅ How Sunchine can help exporters and importers
Sunchine supports Ecuador compliance end to end:
• Identification of the applicable RTE INEN
• Confirmation of the correct certification scheme (INEN 1 or INEN 2)
• Coordination of product testing, inspections, and factory audits
• Support with Certificates of Conformity required for customs clearance
Understanding the right certification scheme early helps avoid delays, rejected shipments, and unnecessary costs.
