Why does PET sheet crack during thermoforming?

When a PET roll starts cracking, the first reaction is often to adjust the machine.

But sometimes the problem starts with the sheet.

Cracking at deep corners, sidewalls, trim areas, or after cooling can point to very different causes. Sheet thickness, material distribution, forming conditions, roll consistency, and even a recent supplier change can all matter.

One thing we always look at as a PET sheet manufacturer is this:

What happens to the material after it leaves the roll and becomes the finished package?

A 0.8 mm PET sheet on the quotation does not mean every area of the formed part will still have the same thickness.

In our latest article, we look at:

• Why PET cracks at deep corners
• How sheet thickness affects weak areas
• Why the same thickness doesn't always mean the same forming behavior
• What to check when changing PET sheet suppliers
• How to tell a material problem from a process problem
• What information to send your PET sheet supplier when troubleshooting

If you're dealing with PET sheet cracking during thermoforming, this is a good place to start.

What Makes Premium Transparent PET Sheets Different?
Not all transparent PET sheets perform the same during thermoforming.

After more than 15 years working with PET sheet production, we’ve learned that the difference is often hidden inside the structure of the sheet.

One important technology behind premium PET sheets is ABA co-extrusion.

With an ABA structure:

A Layer → High clarity & surface quality
B Layer → Strength, recycled content & stability
A Layer → Protection & consistent appearance

This design allows manufacturers to achieve a better balance between:

✓ Transparency
✓ Thermoforming performance
✓ Surface quality
✓ Sustainable material solutions

For APET applications, ABA helps maintain excellent appearance for food trays, cosmetic packaging, and retail displays.

For RPET applications, ABA makes it possible to use recycled PET in the core layer while keeping a clean and attractive surface.

A good PET sheet is not only about thickness or price.

It is about consistency when thousands of packages are produced every day.

Discover how ABA co-extrusion improves PET sheet clarity, thermoforming performance, and sustainability. Learn why premium APET and RPET sheet manufacturers choose ABA structure for demanding packaging applications.

Is 100% RPET always the best choice?

Not necessarily.

Many buyers assume higher recycled content automatically means a better material. In reality, choosing between 30%, 50%, and 100% RPET depends on your packaging application, sustainability targets, processing requirements, and budget.

Our latest guide explains:

✔ The real differences between 30%, 50%, and 100% RPET
✔ What GRS certification actually means
✔ How to choose the right recycled content
✔ Common food packaging applications
✔ A practical procurement checklist for packaging buyers

If your customers are asking for ESG or EPR compliance, this guide is worth a read.

Can any PET sheet be used for medical packaging? Not really.

For medical blister packaging and thermoformed trays, buyers usually need to look at more than transparency or forming performance. Traceability, material consistency, additive control, and supplier support can make a big difference once a project moves from sample testing to repeat production.

In this article, we share a practical guide for medical packaging buyers, including:

✔ Why food-grade PET is not always enough
✔ What to watch for with additives or recycled content
✔ APET vs PETG vs GAG for medical trays and blisters
✔ What to check before placing an order

If you are working on a medical thermoforming project, this guide may help you avoid some common sourcing mistakes.

Something we see quite often 👇

A lot of frozen food packaging still uses PP —
until cracks, warping, or breakage start showing up in cold storage.

So what actually works better in low temperatures?

👉 PET sheet.

It simply holds up better when things get cold:

Less brittle
Better impact resistance
More stable during transport

We broke it down in a simple comparison (no overcomplicated theory):

👉 PET vs PP in cold chain packaging

Would you still choose PP for freezing conditions? 🤔

Learn why PET sheet is more stable than PP in cold chain packaging. Compare impact resistance, brittleness, and performance for frozen food applications.

PLA vs PET Sheet: Which Material Makes More Business Sense for Food Packaging?

Many brands are exploring sustainable packaging options, and PLA often enters the conversation. But when it comes to real-world thermoforming production, is PLA actually the better choice?

In our latest article, we compare:

✅ Thermoforming performance

✅ Packaging cost

✅ Recyclability vs compostability

✅ Production efficiency

✅ Real purchasing scenarios

The conclusion may surprise you. While PLA has its place, PET continues to be the preferred choice for most high-volume food packaging applications due to its balance of performance, recyclability, and cost efficiency.

Read the full comparison and see which material fits your project best.

Compare PLA and PET sheet for food packaging. Learn the differences in thermoforming performance, cost, recyclability, and sustainability, and discover why many manufacturers still choose PET.

Is paper really replacing plastic in thermoforming?

The answer may surprise you.

While paper packaging continues to grow, many paper trays, cups, and containers still rely on plastic coatings for moisture resistance and heat sealing.

In this article, we compare paper, PET, rPET, PP, and molded fiber packaging from the perspective of performance, sustainability, recyclability, and real-world packaging applications.

Is paper really replacing plastic in thermoforming? Explore the facts behind paper packaging, PET, rPET, molded fiber, sustainability claims, recyclability, and material selection for food packaging applications.

Why do PET trays turn white or crack after thermoforming?

Many people immediately blame the sheet material.

However, some of the most common causes are actually process-related:

🔹 Forming temperature too low
🔹 Excessive stretching during forming
🔹 Sharp mold corners
🔹 Uneven sheet thickness
🔹 Plug-assist design problems

The good news?

Most whitening issues can be reduced—or completely eliminated—through systematic troubleshooting.

Before changing material suppliers, make sure your process parameters are fully evaluated.
