Nuclear power is an indispensable resource in today’s world. Since the amount of chemical fuel is finite, the utilization of nuclear power has become a promising approach of providing energy and reducing pollution. However, developing nuclear power has become a controversial issue due to nuclear safety concerns. In this passage, the development and controversial opinions towards nuclear power will be discussed. Examples regarding nuclear safety will be presented. Then possible suggestions will be raised to better exploit nuclear power and to ensure nuclear safety.
The Development of Nuclear Power Utilization
Einstein’s theory of relativity published in the early 20th century is the foundation of formation of nuclear power. In 1938, the first heavy nuclear fission was discovered and in 1942, the first nuclear reaction experimental reactor was built in the U.S. to produce atomic bombs. (Perkins, 245) In 1945, in order to end the WWII, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of people. After the WWII, scientists turned to use nuclear power for peaceful utilization instead of as weapons. The first experimental nuclear power station was established in Soviet Union in 1954. Soon after that, the U.S. started to use nuclear power in generating electricity (Perkins, 247). Currently, there are more than 400 nuclear power plants around the world. Electricity generated by nuclear power takes up about 16.1% total electric power production in the world. In the U.S., nuclear power accounts for 20% of U.S. electricity generation (Davis 50). Without doubt, in such a world where energy has become requisite, nuclear power has become more and more widely used to support people’s demands.
Supportive Opinions on Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is an effective method in alleviating the world energy crisis. The rapid world population growth along with improvements in people’s living standards leads to ever-growing demands for electric power. Science and technology has changed people’s living styles and habits, the utilization of energy has permeated to all aspects of people’s life. Therefore, it is almost impossible for people to live without energy. Nowadays, chemical fuels including coal and oil are widely used for generating electric power. However, chemical fuel releases polluting gases and damages the environment, and more importantly, the storage of chemical fuel is limited and it is urgent to find a new approach of power generator.
Firstly, nuclear power does not discharge enormous contaminants as chemical fuels do. Chemical fuels produce a great deal of carbon dioxide and sulfur oxide to the air, which leads to greenhouse effect, the most serious pollution problem people are faced with today. Nuclear power is regarded as green energy. It provides power without emitting pollutants. Secondly, nuclear power has high energy density, which means a small volume of nuclear material is able to generate a great amount of energy. The energy density of nuclear fuel is millions of times more than chemical fuel. The energy generated by one kilogram of nuclear power is equal to that generated by 24 tons of coal (Perkins, 281). Therefore nuclear power is a very productive approach compared with chemical power. Third, there is abundant reserve of Uranium, the core element applied to generating nuclear power. Unlike chemical fuel, which is not only used in electric generation but also used in many other fields, Uranium is only applied to nuclear power generation. Current nuclear material storage on earth can power the mankind for billions of years.
Current Concerns towards Nuclear Power
Although nuclear power has many advantages over traditional power generating methods, people are concerned with its safety. Nuclear safety concerns contain two major aspects. The first is concerns regarding nuclear proliferation, which is a huge threat to world peace. The second is concerns regarding nuclear leak, which has disastrous impact on the environment and human health.
Reactors in nuclear power plants contain a mass of radioactive substances. In the process of generating nuclear power, strict isolation measures are applied to keep radioactive substances inside reactors. However, once radioactive substances are released into external environments, great damages will be done to the ecology and people. Although the rate of nuclear accidents is becoming less and less frequent, the huge and irretrievable damage raise people’s concerns towards nuclear safety. Radioactive substances from nuclear leak can be extremely horrible to the environment and people’s health. They lead to genic mutation among both humans and plants. They also increase the prevalence of diseases among humans (Ioana, 40).
It is hard to guarantee nuclear safety because too many elements are needed to be taken into consideration in order to avoid nuclear leak. Nuclear leak may be resulted from both natural factors and human factors. There are many examples of how nuclear leak lead to cataclysmic aftereffects. Natural factors include earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, meteorological factors and many other factors. The Fukushima nuclear accident was caused by an earthquake. In 2011, a nuclear power plant in Fukushima was damaged by an earthquake and a tsunami followed, radioactive materials started to leak in March 11th. It took tremendous effort to stop the leak from getting worse. Over one hundred thousand people were involved in radiation checking and 22 of them were confirmed of suffering from radiation exposure. After the Fukushima leak, radioactive elements were discovered widely nearby Fukushima and plants suffered from radiation exposure, too (Lars, 293). Another example is the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986. It is one of the most disastrous accidents in human history. The Chernobyl Disaster was caused by artificial error. According to the Greenpeace, at least ninety thousand people were lead to death and over two hundred thousand got cancer because of the nuclear leak. Radioactive dust from the Chernobyl nuclear leak polluted more than twenty countries. The neighborhood areas were no longer inhabitable (Ioana, 39).
Proceed Nuclear Power Steadily
To meet the soaring demand of energy, nowadays there is no substitute of nuclear power in effectively generating sufficient energy. In other words, although there are many challenges in building nuclear power plants and guarantee their safety, and the consequences of nuclear leak is horrible, we have no other choice but to proceed nuclear power steadily and advance technology to better ensure nuclear safety. Firstly, thorough consideration and comprehensive evaluation should be conducted before building a nuclear power plant, especially in terms of the design, establishment, operating system and location of the nuclear power plant. Secondly, it is urgent to improve technology and capabilities of solving nuclear accidents and to minimize the damage of nuclear accidents. Additionally, pay more efforts to the assessment and maintenance of nuclear power plants and to ensure nuclear safety.
Conclusion
Without doubt, as people’s demand for energy has been ever-increasing. In a world of scare sources, the high efficiency of power generation, low environmental pollution and promising development prospects of nuclear power make it an essential approach of power generation. However, people’s concerns towards nuclear safety and the devastating consequences of nuclear leak make nuclear power a controversial issue. Therefore, we need to proceed nuclear power steadily with thorough consideration and evaluation, as well as assessment and maintenance, and develop technologies to better ensure nuclear safety.
