Coliform bacteria are among the most widely adopted hygiene indicator organisms in food safety standards both in China and internationally. Commonly present in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals as well as in the natural environment, their detection reflects, to a meaningful extent, the level of hygienic control maintained during production, processing, and storage. Coliforms are therefore subject to strict microbiological limit requirements in food standards worldwide. High-risk categories such as meat and meat products, milk and dairy products, and egg products face particularly stringent control expectations.

Conventional plate-count methods require in-house preparation of culture media and multiple steps of plating and incubation, making the workflow labor-intensive and demanding in terms of both operator proficiency and laboratory conditions. The CountEasy RCC Plate integrates the culture medium, pH indicator, and a gas-trapping system into a single ready-to-use, self-contained format, effectively simplifying the detection workflow.
Each plate is pre-loaded with a dry gel matrix. After inoculation with 1 mL of sample suspension and even spreading with a sample spreader, the plate is incubated at 36 ยฑ 1 ยฐC for 18โ24 hours. Coliforms ferment lactose to produce acid and gas: the acid changes the color of the indicator, while the gas is trapped within the gel matrix, forming bubbles. Typical colonies appear red, surrounded by a yellow halo with associated gas bubbles, and can be counted directly by visual inspection โ no confirmation step or instrumental reading is required.
