India has reported more than 300,000 new cases daily for nine days in a row, hitting another global record of 386,452 on April 30. New, increasingly infectious strains of the virus, coupled with super-spreader political and religious events are exacerbating the situation. As a result, we need your help to support India in this time of crisis. The torrential rains and flash flooding caused by Hurricane Iota have hit Chocó, a province in Columbia with a history of extreme poverty and guerilla violence, extremely hard. Quarry Lane School's Spanish Club is partnering with TECHO Colombia to provide food kits to those that were affected, especially low-income families and women. We're working with reputable NGOs on the ground in Choco to make sure the kits get to people that need them most, and we know that with your help, we'll be able to reach our fundraising goal of $3000 and really make a difference.

Las lluvias torrenciales causadas por el Huracán Iota han afectado mucho a Chocó, una provincia de Colombia con una historia de pobreza grave y violencia guerrillera. El Club de Español de Quarry Lane está trabajando con TECHO Colombia para proveer kits de alimentación a las personas que han sido afectadas, especialmente campesinos, familias pobres, y mujeres. Dear friends,

I hope that this message finds you well. In the face of this terrible crisis, we want not only to raise awareness but give you all different ways you can help the people affected by the wildfires in Australia.

A couple of days ago, we received news that a pair of fires united in to an even larger one, and that this will be even more difficult to control than the two individually. There are more than 135 different fires in Australia right now, and this has affected upwards of 15 million acres. There are 3,000 firefighters risking their lives to save lives. A billion animals have died. Three thousand homes have been destroyed. And it’s time to act.

Although we of course want to raise awareness, and pray for the people that are being affected, we know that this isn’t enough. Below, we’ve provided links to several different organizations to whom you can donate to help in this difficult time.

The Quarry Lane Spanish Club and families are going to do everything we can to help, and we hope that you all do the same, because it will take the collaboration of the whole world to help mitigate this crisis. Please leave comments below to show your support for all of those affected.

Espero que este mensaje se encuentren bien. En este tiempo tan duro, queremos no solamente aumentar consciencia sino darle a ustedes unas opciones de maneras en que podemos ayudar a las personas en Australia que han sido afectados por los incendios tan grandes allá.

Hace unos dias, recibimos noticias que dice que un par de incendios muy grande se han unido en uno mas grande, y será muy difícil de combatirlo. Hay mas de 135 diferentes incendios en Australia hoy en dia, y éste está afectando 15 millón de acres. Hay casi 3,000 bomberos que están arriesgando sus vidas para luchar contra los incendios. Un billón de animales ha mu**to. Tres mil hogares han sido destruidos. Y es tiempo de actuar.

Aunque por supuesto tenemos que aumentar consciencia de estes problemas, y rezar por la gente que ha sido afectada, solamente hacer esto no es suficiente. Aquí tenemos varias enlaces a diferentes organizaciones donde ustedes pueden donar para ayudar en este tiempo de crisis.

El Club de Español de Quarry Lane y también los padres de familia vamos a hacer todo lo que podamos para ayudar, y esperamos que ustedes hagan lo mismo, porque requerirá la cooperación de todo el mundo para mitigar esta situación. Rhea Mitr, a sixteen-year old from California, has placed in the Top 30 semifinalists worldwide for the 2019 Breakthrough Junior Challenge Contest, an international science video contest. Rhea's video on Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors made it to the Popular Vote of the challenge which, if she wins, would put her directly into the pool of finalists. The winner of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge will be awarded a $250K scholarship, plus $100K towards a science lab at her school!

Hace unas semanas, el Club de Español de Quarry Lane presentó una cena y una película para ayudar a la gente que ha sido afectada por la inundación en Kerala, India y por los fuegos aquí en California. Nosotros mostramos la película Coco, y pudimos recaudar más de $400. También creamos algunos carteles donde las personas que asistieron al evento escribieron mensajes de amor y apoyo por las personas que ha sido afectada por estas desastres naturales.

A few weeks ago, Quarry Lane’s Spanish Club hosted a benefit dinner and movie to help the people that were affected by the flooding in Kerela, India, and the fires here in California. We showed the movie Coco, and were able to raise more than $400.
