Last week, I posted about WHERE to look for jobs (Google). Today, let’s talk about WHEN to apply.

“Does it matter when I apply for a job?”
Short answer? Yes… but don’t let that stop you.

From my 15+ years in HR and recruiting, I can tell you that early applicants often do have an advantage. When a role was freshly posted, I’d typically review those first applications quickly while the position was top of mind and my interview pipeline was just getting started.

Does that mean companies only hire from the first batch? Absolutely not.

But applying early can help because your resume is more likely to get seen sooner, recruiter attention is highest early on, and interviews often start moving faster than people realize.

On the flip side, I see job seekers assume they’ve “missed their chance” because a posting has been up for a few days (or even longer).

Please don’t reject yourself before they do.

If you’re qualified, apply.

People always ask me, “Where should I be looking for jobs?”
Google.
Yep. Start there.
Google pulls openings from all over the place, like LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, company career pages, etc.
Use Google to find the jobs… then go directly to that platform (or even better, the company website) and apply there.
Easy peasy 💙

Reason #14,038 why I love my job…

Aside from helping people land jobs, it’s messages like this....

Email from client: “I feel a ton better about myself today! 😃 Wow! I read my resume last night and again this morning, and it is awesome! I didn’t know I was so amazing!! I’m like, ‘yeah… why am I hanging around this place?! I’ve got talent!!’ I’m feeling so excited and confident now.”

Knowing that my work gave her the confidence boost she needed to go after something bigger and better. I’m here for it!

Feeling stuck? I’d love to help!

I love waking up to emails like this 😊

Worked on this client’s resume last week…She applied to 4 jobs and landed interviews for all 4.

This is exactly why I love what I do 💙

Proof is in the screenshot 😉

Two tips to help you impress recruiters.
Tip #1: Offer a Personalized Write-Up
After your recruiter call, when they say, “Great, I’m going to submit your resume to the team,” ask, “Would it be helpful if I sent you a short write-up explaining why I’m a great fit?” This proactive move not only shows initiative but also helps ensure your strengths are clearly communicated in the recruiter’s summary, making a powerful first impression on the hiring manager.
Tip #2: Network & Connect
Keep the conversation going, ask:
“By the way, what other positions are you currently recruiting for? I’d be happy to introduce you to someone in my network who might be a good fit.”
This shows you’re not only invested in your own success but are also a team player who adds value by helping fill roles faster. A win-win for both you and the recruiter.

The “your resume must be one page” rule? It’s outdated.
Job seekers get so caught up in forcing everything onto one page that they end up cutting strong accomplishments, metrics, and context that actually matter.
Here’s the truth:
HR and recruiters do not care if your resume is one page or two. They care if the right information is there.
I’ve heard people say, “They only read the first page anyway.”
That might have been true 10+ years ago.
But not anymore.
We scroll all day. Social media trained us well 😂 Scrolling to page two is not a burden.
If it takes two pages to show your value clearly and strategically, take the two pages.
Don’t shrink your experience just to follow an old rule.

If you’re applying to jobs and not hearing back…

it’s probably not you.

It’s probably your resume.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years in HR and Recruiting, and I can tell you, formatting, keywords, and positioning your story matter way more than people think.

If you’re feeling stuck or frustrated, reach out. I’d be happy to help 🙂

Quick resume tip 👇
How to include older work experience without aging yourself…
If you have some really great achievements from 15+ years ago, it’s best not to include them in your experience section.
Instead....
Pull those highlights into your summary.
Why this works:
You still showcase your wins
You keep your experience section focused and relevant
You avoid unintentionally dating yourself

The job hunting process is a lot of work, and it can feel overwhelming at times. Sometimes it helps to get back to the basics.

Start with your goals, update your resume, refresh your LinkedIn, prepare for interviews, network, and then start applying.

Good luck! 🍀

Never accept a job offer on the spot.

Companies usually do not lead with their best offer, so always ask:
“Is this negotiable?”

Ask for more money…usually $5K–$10K more. And if salary is firm, negotiate other parts of the package like: sign-on bonus, more PTO, better title, or remote flexibility.

Also, stop believing the myth that a company will rescind an offer just because you negotiated.

The truth is, you could be locked into that salary for years, and raises are usually small. If you do not negotiate now, you may end up underpaid and frustrated later.

That is the game.
They want to pay less. You want to earn more.
Advocate for yourself.

👉 Not getting job offers to negotiate? That’s where I come in. Reach out! I can help you get there.
