Visited Costa Rica recently and was amazed at how beautiful nature is all around the country. There are colorful birds and animals everywhere, something I haven't seen outside nature preserves in other countries. They really do take care of nature here.

Oh, and people are very friendly, and the food outstanding. We had a blast! I wish I'd visited sooner, being so close all this time.

At Plaza Santo Domingo, you'll find Santo Domingo church, and more importantly, "Gertrudis", aka "La Gorda", the iconic statue by famed Colombian sculpture Fernando Botero.

Legend says that couples that touch her bosoms will have a happy relationship to last a lifetime and you will surely one day return to Cartagena. If you're single, then it means you'll be back a second time, but alongside the love of your life.

The best (and fastest) way to see Cartagena is by taking a guided bike tour. You get a great overview of all the major points, so you can revisit later at leisure. It was a highlight to be able to ride atop the length of the city wall, and learn about its history at the same time.

Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a must for visitors. Set on a hill, it offers great views of the city. The castle is filled with tunnels to allow armies to move undetected.

The Old Shoes ( ) monument outside the walls is also a popular photo spot.

Barrio Getsemaní is a popular destination just outside Cartagena's city walls. It used to be the neighborhood where working people and the poor lived. Today it's full of colorful murals, flower filled streets, traditional music, and many cute restaurants and coffee shops.
