Fun fact about the Scarlet Macaw (Lapa)

Scarlet macaws mate for life—and you’ll often see them flying in pairs or small family groups, loudly calling to each other as they cross the rainforest sky

Known locally as the Lapa (L-A-P-A), the scarlet macaw is one of Costa Rica’s most eye-catching birds. With its blazing red feathers, bright yellow and blue wings, and powerful curved beak, it’s almost impossible to miss. These parrots are highly intelligent, social, and can live 40–60 years in the wild.

Beyond their beauty, Lapas are vital to the ecosystem: they help regenerate forests by spreading seeds over long distances. Because of this, their presence is often a sign of a healthy jungle.

The scarlet macaw has become an iconic symbol of Costa Rica, representing the country’s rich biodiversity, conservation success stories, and strong connection to nature. Seeing a pair of Lapas flying overhead is, for many visitors and locals alike, a true “this is Costa Rica” moment. 🌴🇨🇷
