International architecture, land planning and design studio based in Costa Rica. VOID began its activities in 2012. VOID.

Currently it is constituted by architects Sergio Frugone, Felipe Rossi and Ricardo Sevilla. As an office we have a strong conviction that every project we develop, be it private or public development, should be thought to impact its imediate local context in a greater way. VOID does not pretend to be a traditional studio, rather, a creative studio where we believe in multidisciplinary processes an

d possess and promote a strong culture of collaboration. We believe that this way of working allows for critical and thoughtful discussion which opens new perspectives and opportunities when undertaking a project. We are an office structured on three pillas that involve design (Experience/Performance/Execution) and that converge in their center with the client, reminding us what is most important in each project. An idea that gathers its architects is the void (in the most exact sense of the word).

En proyectos de hospitality, el interiorismo define la experiencia del huésped tanto como la arquitectura.

En este proyecto en la costa del Pacífico de Costa Rica, el diseño de interiores parte de una decisión clara: que cada espacio refleje el lugar donde está. Materiales locales, texturas naturales, arte que habla del territorio. Las habitaciones no tienen un estilo importado tienen una identidad propia construida desde el sitio.

La línea entre interior y exterior se disuelve. La vegetación, la luz y las vistas son parte del programa tanto como el mobiliario y los acabados.

In hospitality projects, interior design defines the guest experience as much as the architecture does.

In this project on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the interior design is built around one clear decision: every space should reflect the place it’s in. Local materials, natural textures, art rooted in the territory. The rooms don’t carry an imported aesthetic
they have an identity built from the site itself.

The line between interior and exterior dissolves. Vegetation, light, and views are as much a part of the program as the furniture and finishes.

Crecer en este territorio nos permite entender que la selva no es un contexto es un interlocutor. La topografía no es un obstáculo es una instrucción. El agua, la luz, la fauna, los ciclos del clima todo habla, y la arquitectura tiene la obligación de escuchar antes de proponer.

Esta comprensión transformó nuestra práctica. Nos llevó a cuestionar cada decisión de implantación, cada material, cada manera en que un edificio toca el suelo. Nos llevó al diseño regenerativo no como una etiqueta, sino como una postura ética frente al territorio.

Diseñar de manera regenerativa en un ecosistema como el costarricense significa asumir que la naturaleza ya tiene una arquitectura propia una que tomó millones de años construirse. Nuestra responsabilidad es intervenir sin borrarla y construir sin interrumpirla.

Costa Rica no es el telón de fondo de nuestro trabajo. Es su razón de ser.

Growing up in this territory allows us to understand that the jungle is not a context it is an interlocutor. The topography is not an obstacle it is an instruction. Water, light, wildlife, the cycles of the climate everything speaks, and architecture has an obligation to listen before it proposes.

This understanding transformed our practice. It led us to question every decision about how a building is placed on the land, every material, every way a structure touches the ground. It brought us to regenerative design not as a label, but as an ethical stance toward the territory.

Designing regeneratively within an ecosystem like Costa Rica’s means accepting that nature already has its own architecture one that took millions of years to build. Our responsibility is to intervene without erasing it, and to build without interrupting it.

Costa Rica is not the backdrop of our work. It is the reason for it.

Treetops | Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Diseño de bajo impacto en ecosistemas sensibles.

Elevar una vivienda sobre pilotes no es solo una decisión formal, es una estrategia ambiental. En Treetops, este criterio reduce la intervención directa sobre el suelo, mantiene la vegetación existente y preserva los flujos naturales de agua y fauna bajo la arquitectura.

La arquitectura no transforma el sitio. Convive con él.

Raising a house on stilts is not just a formal decision — it is an environmental strategy. In Treetops, this approach minimizes direct intervention on the ground, preserves existing vegetation, and maintains the natural flow of water and wildlife beneath the structure.
Architecture does not transform the site. It coexists with it.

The Merged | Master plan | New York

The Merged nace desde una premisa clara:
en un territorio lacustre, el paisaje se obedece.

El masterplan se estructura a partir del sistema hídrico: el lago, los humedales, los escurrimientos y los cuerpos de agua conectados. En lugar de imponer una trama rígida, el proyecto define zonas, transiciones y circulaciones desde la lógica natural del sitio.

La estrategia integra áreas de manejo de agua basadas en soluciones naturales (NBS), como swales, jardines de lluvia, bioretención e infiltración, que permiten filtrar, retener y devolver el agua al sistema, reforzando su resiliencia.

El agua no es solo paisaje: es el sistema rector que organiza el crecimiento, protege los bordes sensibles y define el orden de un proyecto de planeamiento territorial.

The Merged begins with a clear premise:
in a lake territory, the landscape must be respected and followed.

The masterplan is structured around the site’s hydrological system: the lake, wetlands, runoff flows, and connected water bodies. Rather than imposing a rigid grid, the project defines zones, transitions, and circulation through the site’s natural logic.

The strategy integrates water management areas based on Nature Based Solutions (NBS) such as swales, rain gardens, bioretention, and infiltration systems designed to filter, retain, and return water to the ecosystem, strengthening its resilience.

Here, water is not only scenery: it is the governing system that organizes growth, protects sensitive edges, and defines the order of a territorial planning project.

Una clínica diseñada para mantener el programa claro, eficiente y fácil de recorrer. La distribución organiza circulaciones, áreas de espera y consultorios priorizando la privacidad y un funcionamiento ordenado tanto para pacientes como para el equipo médico. La arquitectura se define por un volumen limpio que se abre estratégicamente para incorporar luz natural en los puntos necesarios, manteniendo al mismo tiempo áreas más controladas donde la privacidad es esencial. En el interior, el diseño se enfoca en materiales cálidos, acabados durables y detalles cuidadosamente resueltos. El objetivo es lograr un espacio cómodo equilibrando función, claridad y una presencia arquitectónica serena dentro del contexto urbano.

A clinic designed to maintain a clear, efficient, and intuitive program. The layout organizes circulation, waiting areas, and consultation rooms, prioritizing privacy and a well-ordered flow for both patients and medical staff.

The architecture is defined by a clean volume that strategically opens to bring in natural light where needed, while maintaining more controlled areas where privacy is essential.

Inside, the design focuses on warm materials, durable finishes, and carefully resolved details. The goal is to create a comfortable environment, balancing function, clarity, and a serene architectural presence within the urban context.

Las visitas a obra son una parte clave del proceso.
Es donde el proyecto se entiende a escala real y donde se aprenden cosas que no aparecen en planos: proporciones, detalles, encuentros, materialidad y cómo se siente el espacio.

Cada recorrido ayuda a ajustar, confirmar y tomar mejores decisiones.

Site visits are a key part of the process.
They’re where the project is understood at full scale, and where you learn things that never fully show up in drawings: proportions, details, junctions, materiality, and how the space actually feels.

Each walk-through helps us adjust, confirm, and make better decisions.

Barvak | Heredia, Costa Rica

El proyecto se implanta con cuidado para reducir impacto, y se organiza mediante un sistema modular que se adapta a la topografía, las vistas y la orientación. A través de estrategias bioclimáticas, la arquitectura busca mantener confort sin depender de soluciones mecánicas, priorizando sombra, ventilación y espacios intermedios.

The project is carefully sited to minimize environmental impact and organized through a modular system that adapts to the topography, views, and orientation. Through bioclimatic strategies, the architecture seeks to maintain comfort without relying on mechanical systems, prioritizing shade, natural ventilation, and transitional spaces.

Guarumo | Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Topografía como orden

La implantación es uno de los actos más determinantes del proyecto arquitectónico. Antes de hablar de materiales o tecnologías, la manera en que un edificio se posa sobre el terreno define su impacto real.

En Guarumo, la topografía no es un condicionante a superar, sino el sistema que ordena el proyecto. La estrategia principal es el escalonamiento de volúmenes, donde cada bloque del programa se adapta a la cota natural del terreno, permitiendo que la arquitectura siga la lógica geográfica del sitio.

Topography as Order

Siting is one of the most decisive acts in any architectural project. Before speaking about materials or technologies, the way a building settles on the land defines its true impact.

In Guarumo, topography is not a constraint to overcome, but the system that organizes the project. The main strategy is the stepping of volumes, where each program block adapts to the site’s natural elevation, allowing the architecture to follow the geographic logic of the terrain.
