Cilj osnivanja Centra za modeliranje podzemnih voda je šira naučna i stručna promocija najsavremenije metode u okviru hidrodinamičke analize režima podzemnih voda kojom se bavi deo stručnjaka Departmana za hidrogeologiju. Ujedno cilj je i promocija obrazovne, naučne, komercijalne i tehničke saradnje između Fakulteta i domaćih i stranih institucija koje se bave ovom problematikom ili imaju potrebe

za rešavanjem određenih problema u ovoj oblasti. Savremena hidrogeološka istraživanja gotovo su nezamisliva bez primene hidrodinamičkih modela u cilju određivanja hidrogeoloških parametara, rasporeda pijezometarskih nivoa u strujnom polju (izdanskom toku), kvantifikacije bilansa izdani, propagacije zagađenja izdanskih voda i prognoze određenih hidrogeoloških, hidrodinamičkih i hidroloških procesa u toku vremena. Bitne osobine hidrodinamičkog modela su: mogućnost relativno lakog sprovođenja obimnih hidrodinamičkih proračuna, simulacija procesa koji se odvijaju u hidrogeološkom sistemu, prognoza režima izdani i pratećih procesa filtracije izdanskih voda u različitim uslovima, i mogućnost obezbeđenja dovoljno pouzdanih podloga za optimizaciju kako istraživanja, tako i samog tehničkog rešenja postavljenog zadatka. Prednost primene hidrodinamičkog modeliranja u odnosu na druge metode istraživanja izdanskih voda ogleda se u mogućnosti simulacije složenih uslova i oblika filtracije, i prognozi efekata planiranog tehničkog rešenja, za praktično neograničeni broj proračunskih šema. Mogućnost sprovođenja velikog broja hidrodinamičkih proračuna na hidrodinamičkom modelu filtracije izdanskih voda, omogućava optimizaciju istražnih radova u svim fazama hidrogeoloških istraživanja, kao i dobijanje optimalnog tehničkog rešenja.
