Cyprus & Wine: A Story Through Time | Episode 5 🍇
The ancient roots of Cyprus wine.
Wine has been part of Cyprus’ identity for thousands of years, with a history deeply connected to the island’s people, landscapes and traditions. Long before modern wineries and technology, generations of Cypriot farmers cultivated vineyards, cared for the vines by hand, and celebrated the arrival of harvest as a time of community and connection.
Traditionally, harvest was a shared experience. Families and villages would come together in the vineyards during the early morning hours, carefully hand-picking grapes at their optimum ripeness. The grapes were collected, transported, and transformed into wine using knowledge and techniques passed down from one generation to the next.
Many of these traditions continue today. Across Cyprus, vineyards are still shaped by the island’s unique climate and landscape, with some producers continuing the ancient practice of dry farming allowing vines to rely on natural rainfall rather than irrigation. This is the approach we take at our winery, encouraging deep-rooted vines that adapt to the challenging conditions and express the true character of the land.
While modern winemaking has brought new techniques and technology, the heart of harvest remains the same: respect for the land, careful attention to the vines, and a deep appreciation for the people behind every bottle.
From hand-harvesting native varieties to working with old vineyard sites, each harvest connects us to the generations of winemakers who came before us.
