How many tens of thousands of euros can you save a year by flying an ANG-01 instead of a Cirrus SR22?

We compared the cost of owning two aircraft with similar specs, based on 100 flight hours a year.

Picture it: Saturday, you arrive at the airport and fill the ANG with regular 95, the same fuel that goes in your car. And off you go along the coast for lunch in Paphos. Meanwhile, your SR22 neighbour at Larnaca pays almost twice as much for avgas, and burns twice as much of it.

Now, the money:

On fuel alone, the ANG costs 4 times less. Insurance is lower, because the ANG itself costs less. Maintenance is lighter too. Over a year it adds up to about €16,800 versus €37,000 for the Cirrus. That’s €168 per flight hour versus €370.

How much does it cost to own a brand-new 5-seat ANG aircraft? Here is the number the big-name brands are usually afraid to publish.

We added up every cost for one year: 100 hours in the air (that means flying beyond Cyprus roughly once a month), aircraft maintenance, insurance and parking at Larnaca airport.

Annual inspection: €1,900 (not counting the engine overhaul, which will be due in about 20 years). Parking at Larnaca: just €1,500 a year. Fuel: €4,700 a year. Insurance: €6,500 a year.

All together, it comes to only about €14,600 a year, or roughly €1,200 a month, for your own sky over the Mediterranean. For comparison, the same annual costs for a Cirrus SR22 come to around €35,200, almost 2.5 times as much.

Meet the next-generation ANG: ANG-02.

We went through what the ANG-02 will be and put the highlights here.
Picture this: July in Cyprus, close to 40 outside. You sit down in the cockpit, set a comfortable temperature once, and it holds on the ground and at altitude. New visors keep the sun out of your eyes. In front of you is one large, clear Garmin AXIS screen instead of several separate instruments: less to learn, fewer buttons.

The easier and cheaper way to fly the whole family to Italy? You won’t believe it!

We compared two ways to get five people to Italy for a weekend: Rome, Milan, Venice or Palermo. Airline, or your own ANG.

Friday. You want to be in Milan by Saturday lunch. With the airline you hunt for 5 seats, pay Friday’s price and plan around the timetable. With the ANG you pick any time and take off.

Door to door, the time is about the same everywhere. Except Palermo: no direct flight from Cyprus to Sicily, the connection takes 11 h 15. ANG flies straight and lands in 6 h 25.

Now the magic. Money, round trip. 5 last-minute tickets to Milan: up to €1,340. ANG fuel: €575. Venice: up to €1,460 against €525. Palermo: up to €2,130 against €455. And the tank costs the same whether you book a month ahead or fly tomorrow...

An hour in an ANG costs about €41 in fuel. The same hour in, for example, a Cirrus SR22 costs €220. That is €179 of difference, every hour you fly.

ANG burns 28 L/h and fills up with ordinary MOGAS 95 at the same pump as your car, €1.47 a litre. Most rivals need AVGAS 100LL at €3.67. Seven 4-seat aircrafts, identical rules: 4 adults at 80 kg, tanks full, price at the pump. And ANG seats five.

Cyprus to Sicily and back, 3,340 km, about nine hours in the air: roughly 250 litres, under €400 of fuel. The same trip in an SR22 is close to €2,000.
Fly 100 hours a year and you spend €4,100 instead of €22,000. Nearly €18,000 saved, on fuel alone.

The reason: a 380 kg airframe and a turbocharged 160 hp Rotax 916 iS. 245 litres take you 2,500 km.

One engine makes all three possible: the Rotax 916 iS. Turbocharged, electronically injected, 160 hp (117 kW) at 5,800 rpm and just 85.8 kg complete with gearbox, turbo, intercooler and exhaust. The best power to weight ratio in the Rotax aircraft engine range.

Altitude stops costing you power: full take off power up to 15,000 ft, ceiling 23,000 ft. That is where the ANG cruise of 370 km/h at 7,000 m comes from.
