Cyprus has introduced a new tax incentive that could make a real difference to your finances when you return.

Under the Brain Gain Initiative, qualifying individuals are entitled to a 25% income tax exemption on their salary or business profits, capped at €25,000 per year and available for up to 7 years. The measure applies retroactively from 1 January 2025.

To qualify, you generally need to have been living outside Cyprus for the past 7 years, start work or a business here before the end of 2030, and earn at least €30,000 per year.

There is also an important planning consideration: this exemption cannot be combined with the existing Article 8(21A) exemption, so it’s worth getting professional advice before making a decision.

On 1 January 2026, Cyprus rolled out its biggest tax reform in 20+ years. For businesses, investors, and tax professionals, early understanding is critical.

👉 Key Corporate Changes:
✅ Corporate income tax increases from 12.5% to 15%, aligning with OECD Pillar Two requirements
✅ Loss carry-forward extended from 5 to 7 years
✅ Cyprus maintains its competitive edge with 0% tax on qualifying dividends, 0% capital gains tax (CGT) on securities, and continued IP Box and Notional Interest Deduction (NID) regimes

👉 Personal Taxation Updates:
✅ Tax-free threshold raised to €22,000
✅ Enhanced family deductions and new housing-related tax relief
✅ Dividend SDC reduced from 17% to 5% for Cyprus tax residents

👉 New Compliance Requirements:
✅ Mandatory tax filing for all residents aged 25-71
✅ Enhanced powers for the Tax Commissioner
✅ Rental Payments above €500/month must be done electronically from 1 July 2026

👉 Emerging Asset Classes:
✅ 8% flat tax on crypto-asset gains
✅ Preferential 8% regime for qualified stock options
