Global Defense Spending Reaches Historic Highs

Global military expenditure reached a record US$2.89 trillion in 2025, increasing by 9.4% year-on-year, while European NATO Allies and Canada increased defense spending by almost 20% in real terms during 2025. NATO members are now committed to investing 5% of GDP by 2035, with 3.5% allocated to core defense capabilities and 1.5% to resilience and defense-related infrastructure.

Gold Strengthens Its Strategic Role

Central banks purchased 863 tonnes of gold during 2025, while official institutions collectively hold approximately 38,700 tonnes, representing around US$5 trillion in reserves. Gold demand reached a historic 5,002 tonnes with an estimated market value of US$555 billion, reflecting continued geopolitical uncertainty and reserve diversification.
