The Strait of Hormuz and Global Energy Risk

Iranian escalation remains closely linked to global energy vulnerability due to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of global seaborne oil passes daily. Maritime incidents, tanker seizures, drone attacks, and military signaling repeatedly create oil market volatility, raise insurance premiums, and disrupt shipping flows. European economies remain exposed despite diversification efforts, as Gulf instability impacts inflation, energy pricing, and supply-chain resilience. The securitization of maritime corridors increasingly fuels broader global economic insecurity, affecting markets, trade stability, and macroeconomic planning worldwide.

Road Freight and the Future of Middle Eastern Transit Corridors

Middle East economies depend heavily on road freight for food, medicine, and goods amid maritime disruptions. Key inland corridors and bypass projects offer partial resilience against Hormuz and Red Sea risks redundancy after Hormuz.

Civilian Resilience Under Regional Escalation

The escalation surrounding Iran increasingly affects civilians, infrastructure resilience, economic stability, and governance. Missile and drone exchanges have exposed urban centres, energy facilities, ports, and transport corridors to vulnerability across the Gulf and wider Middle East. Maritime insecurity threatens trade routes linking Europe and Asia, while inflationary pressure, displacement risks, and social instability rise. Beyond casualties, the conflict is weakening institutional capacity and intensifying regional polarization. States are recalibrating emergency preparedness, air defense systems, and crisis management under hybrid insecurity.

Iran, Proxy Networks, and Regional Instability

Iran has increasingly evolved from a regional actor into a major driver of Middle Eastern instability through missile modernisation, drone warfare, cyber capabilities, proxy expansion, and maritime pressure across the Gulf and Red Sea. Since the weakening of the JCPOA after 2018, escalation intensified, particularly following the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani, which accelerated confrontation between Iran, Israel, and the United States. Tehran’s influence across Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen continues to reshape regional deterrence while increasing risks of miscalculation and multi-theatre escalation. Maritime incidents in the Strait of Hormuz further threaten global energy infrastructure and international shipping routes.
