ArtLandS Lab was established at the ARU - University of Cyprus in 2010. The Lab is directed by Dr Athanasios Vionis.

It's aims are (a) the documentation and study of archaeological landscapes and (b) the study and publication of ceramic finds.

This was the end of our 6th and final week of excavations by ArtLandS Lab of the Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ in the Xeros River valley, Cyprus. The results regarding ritual and ceramic production in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Early Middle Ages are overwhelming but will spare the details until the Annual Workshop of the Archaeological Research Unit (UCY) in early 2027. Once again, our Τμήμα Ιστορίας Αρχαιολογίας Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου team of archaeology students was amazing this season, while the special visitors at our two sites in Week 6 made us super happy! Long live SeSaLaC and we look forward to coming back to Kophinou and Menogeia in 2027!

End of Week 5 for SeSaLaC by ArtLandS Lab, Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ Τμήμα Ιστορίας Αρχαιολογίας Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου! From better to best every week thanks to our amazing team. No space to summarise this week’s highlights but we should note instead how blessed we feel. The words of support we receive from friends, colleagues and former students is overwhelming! Especially appreciated the visit by Pantelitsa Mylona (Larnaka Museum), our friend Evi Karyda, our former student and colleague Judith Gatt and the best group of high school teachers ever (led by Konstantina Loutsiou and Τώνια Λοΐζου)! End of Week 4 for SeSaLaC by ArtLandS Lab, Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ Τμήμα Ιστορίας Αρχαιολογίας Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου! A week of visits by beloved friends, colleagues and former students, as well as hard and systematic work by our team of students. The results of this week confirm continuity of ceramic production in the Xeros valley to the period of transformations in the 7th-8th centuries AD but also the continuity of Christian ritual from the 6th to the 16th century at the chapel dedicated to one of the so-called “refuge” Saints in Cyprus… Truly unique finds for writing the unwritten history of rural Cyprus in the Middle Ages. Another overwhelming week thanks to our fantastic students, to whom we are most grateful!

The end of Week 3 for the Settled & Sacred Landscapes of Cyprus excavations in the Xeros River valley, Larnaka district. What an amazing week, during which humble sealed clay, water management infrastructures, tools and wasters started composing the poem of late antique and early medieval ceramic production and technology on the island! Proof that the most profound insights come from the most modest remains… Also a week of bonding again with the local community and the Church. Thank you team SeSaLaC!

SeSaLaC excavation project 2026 is on! This was the end of a successful and joyful 1st week (out of a total of 6) in the Xeros River valley, Larnaka district, Cyprus! We started investigating production at our Late Antique pottery workshop but there will be more to follow in the duration of the season. Together with a dedicated team of Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ students!
