SCoVE First Aid Short Course

As you will recall, we launched a survey earlier to harvest opinions about creating a mini course to guide veterinary students and expose them to more resources on first aid and emergency medicine in Veterinary Practice, from the responses, we were able to infer that there is a demand for this. As such, we have put together an online course on First Aid and Emergency Medicine in Animals and it has been hosted on Google Classroom.

In order to access SCoVE's First Aid Google Classroom, go to classroom.google.com, on the top right corner, click on the '+' icon the click on join class. There will be a field for you enter class code, type "usncp6m" and you are in!

Special appreciation goes to Camille de Pasquale, Jana Vrabelova, Alexander del Bianco, Aravinthan Ramachandran, Diana Teixeira and Kashif ur Rahman for working so hard on the team for months to get this course done!

We hope you will enjoy our course!

NOTE: this course shall be periodically updated and announcements shall be made in the classroom whenever updates are made.

This week’s instalment follows a group of Kenyan women whose job involves risking their lives daily, to protect the many wildlife subject to poaching on the Amboseli National Park. The aptly named is an 8- woman strong patrol unit, making up one unit of a 76 ranger team, whose aim is to protect the local wildlife from poachers and meat trafficking; they also have a fundamental role in protecting the community from wildlife attacks.

Regular 20km patrols, visits to the local community and documenting wildlife sightings form just a few of the tasks of these rangers. Their work stems from the underlying belief that humans and wildlife share the land as equals, and are reliant upon each other for co-existence. However, this does not make wildlife encounters any less dangerous, as the threat of attack from animals such as lions or water buffalo is an ever present risk. This risk has become only increasingly more apparent after the onset of Covid-19, as it has now become impossible to rely upon the previously invaluable knowledge of the local communities, as to the whereabouts of potential wildlife threats; this is due to the requirement for people to remain in their homes.
TeamLioness also represents a milestone achievement for those women embodying it, as they have taken on roles previously only considered worthy of their male counterparts. This has allowed these women to support their families through better salaries, as well as proving to their communities that they have the resolve and strength to undertake the many harsh and dangerous tasks that the life of a ranger invokes.
