This week, we are at the NTN Forum’s Colloquium & General Assembly at ESA - European Space Agency ESTEC, demonstrating how Cyprus is contributing to the development and adoption of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).

A key part of that contribution is our SAT IoT Hub — developed and built in Cyprus for direct-to-satellite IoT connectivity.

Its first version was developed as one of the early commercially available pre-standard NTN Direct-to-Satellite (D2S) products. At the Forum, we are also presenting the roadmap towards SAT IoT Hub v2, based on 3GPP standards and designed to support multi-constellation connectivity.

This technology is already moving beyond development into real application scenarios. Through the GroundWork project, NTN connectivity is being explored for low-power IoT sensing in remote agricultural areas, including the monitoring of soil, environmental conditions and animals.

With the support of ESA - European Space Agency and the Cyprus Space Office , we are continuing to develop satellite IoT technology locally while connecting it to the wider European space and telecommunications ecosystem.

Careful integration, configuration and testing are key processes for transforming individual components into fully functional prototypes.

This image captures part of that process at CYRIC: connecting control electronics, motor drivers and communication interfaces into a complete setup, then checking how each element performs as part of the wider system.

Much of engineering happens at this stage — identifying faults, refining connections and validating that hardware and software operate together reliably before the technology moves forward.

Strong research deserves to be understood.

Dissemination helps EU-funded projects communicate their objectives, activities and results to researchers, industry, policymakers and the wider public.

It can create opportunities for collaboration, encourage feedback and help organisations identify where project results could be applied.

Dissemination is therefore more than publishing occasional updates. It is part of the process of connecting research with the people who may use, support or build upon it.

Without clear communication, even valuable results can remain unnoticed.

Within SYMPHONY, CYRIC is designing the control and communication module that controls the photonic sensors and processes environmental raw data using embedded AI models running on the Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The results from the AI model are then forwarded to the cloud through the LoRaWAN network.

CYRIC participated in a dedicated training session delivered by ASYGN for the SYMPHONY project partners, hosted by C2N (Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) in Paris, focusing on the Colibry Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and its integration into the project's edge AI platform.

The Colibry NPU is an ultra-low-power microcontroller designed to accelerate AI-driven processing. By integrating a fully reconfigurable and efficient Neural Network Processing Accelerator (NNPA), it enables high-performance AI inference while maintaining very low power consumption, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

The training session combined knowledge transfer and technical validation, covering the Colibry architecture and development pipeline, as well as the deployment and ex*****on of a TensorFlow Lite model. The practical activities were performed using the Colibry EvalBoardTiny, allowing the partners to validate model ex*****on and assess performance on the target hardware.

Photonics allow us to detect, measure and analyse information that may be difficult or impossible to observe using conventional methods.

In areas such as food and water quality, environmental monitoring, healthcare and industrial analysis, photonic technologies can support faster, more sensitive and more compact sensing systems.

Their importance extends beyond the laboratory. When photonic components are integrated into practical instruments, advanced analysis can move closer to farms, factories and field locations.

Here at CYRIC, the science of photonics remains a core part of our research and innovation activities.

Unmanned aerial and ground systems are becoming increasingly important in civil operations where accurate data, flexibility and fast deployment are essential.

The portfolio includes fixed-wing, multirotor and VTOL platforms, alongside compact robotic ground systems, supporting applications such as 3D mapping, search and rescue, precision agriculture, infrastructure inspection and environmental monitoring.

CYRIC is pleased to share that our PhD candidate, Savvas Nicolaides, presented his work at MED 2026 – The 34th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation, held from 23–26 June 2026 at Università Politecnica delle Marche in Ancona, Italy.

Savvas presented his research titled “Distributed Model Predictive Control for Heterogeneous UAV-UGV Cooperative Navigation”, contributing to discussions within the control and automation community.

The conference also provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and engage with researchers, academics and professionals working across advanced control, automation and intelligent systems.

This work is funded by the Republic of Cyprus, through the Research and Innovation Foundation, under grant PHD IN INDUSTRY/1222/0080.

CYRIC is pleased to introduce PHOTOMIX, a new EU-funded research and innovation project coordinated by CYRIC

PHOTOMIX will develop a unified digital platform for multimodal, multiscale, broadband hyperspectral imaging, combining advanced photonic sensing technologies such as miniaturised FTIR spectroscopy, Raman imaging, visible imaging and photothermal spectroscopy.

Enhanced by data fusion and machine learning, the project will support faster, more accurate and non-destructive sensing across three key application areas: healthcare, environmental monitoring and industrial sustainability.

In healthcare, PHOTOMIX will focus on supporting the diagnosis of head and neck cancers. In environmental monitoring, it will advance the identification and classification of microplastics in drinking water. In industrial sustainability, it will support the monitoring of polymer biodegradation processes in aquatic environments.

The PHOTOMIX consortium brings together 12 partners from 6 countries: CYRIC , Si-Ware Systems , IZONIC , Cambridge Raman Imaging Ltd. , Université Gustave Eiffel , IPHT, TU Wien , Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών University of Patras , VIVID, Politecnico di Milano , Universität Wien and Universitätsklinikum Jena .

Through PHOTOMIX, the consortium aims to contribute to compact, high-performance and cost-efficient photonic sensing solutions for real-world biomedical, environmental and industrial challenges.
