The Department of Antiquities, Deputy Ministry of Culture, invites you to the music theatre Palimpseston (palimpsest).

The term palimpsest comes from the ancient Greek compound word palimpsestos, which is formed from “πάλιν” meaning “again” and the verb “ψέω”/“ψόω”, meaning “to scratch”. It is used to describe a manuscript or a visual work from which the original text (or its image) has been removed or covered up —either by scratching or by covering it with a new work— so that a new text can be written over it. As a result, they are reused as the basis for newer creations.

Similarly, the same happens in cities like Nicosia (as well as throughout Cyprus), where monuments—or entire areas—were covered with new monuments, houses, or whatever else was created by the residents and locals of the time.
Often influenced by different cultures, the result is a multi-stylistic mosaic, which nonetheless retains its core character.
It is along these lines that the work Palimpseston / Cuprum was created.
